How to kill a white wolf?

I threw a tainted bait, he ate it but just ran away and vanished :(
Do you need extra arrows, too?
I mean the quest tells me about a ghost wolf, and I'm hoping he will appear on other islands as well, or did I miss my chance? ^^

I fought and killed the "elder wolf." I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about, but either way, the elder wolf had a similar mechanic. I received a quest notification to slay him(before he slays Scout).

I immediately tried to feed him tainted bait, which he would take and simply disappear. I did this twice, but he came back a third time. I used a spear trap during the third encounter and it killed him instantly.

I'm curious if the tainted bait weakened him first or if he simply dies like the other wolves do to the spear trap.

Damnit. Well, for me, he vanished for good after the first time with the tainted bait.
Even waited nights.

Did the quest disappear too?

If you still had the quest, then I assume it was similar to the elder wolf. After I tossed the meat, he'd leave the area completely, but when I explored other "forest" areas, he came back to hunt me. I don't recall him attacking me in other types of areas aside from the forests zones--though I may be mistaken.

It might be different though with the white wolf. The quest with the elder wolf implies that he has your scent and he is hunting you.

aaaaah, no, the quest "white wolve" (think they mean the elder wolf) didn't disappear :D

If you fail to kill him when you get the quest, he will just despawn on that very location, but any other similar location will spawn it.

When I first had my encounter with the elder wolf, I keept trying to shoot him with the bow, he got hit and legged it. I thought it was part of the encounter and that you have to keep at it in new locations until he either stays and fights or goes down. Wasted 10 arrows like this, then I tried the spear trap and voilas, my new shiny jacket :)
