As you're rafting, each dockable island has a symbol. The one with the fire/teepee symbol has the campfires. The only other way to get fires is making them or one of the early quests will give you one as a reward. Boards are one of the items needed to make your own fire, but they're also needed in the crafting recipe of one of the raft upgrades. You may want to save your boards for that. Once you get enough boards and upgrades, you can eventually have your own personal campfire on your raft!

Another thing to note is that if it's raining, and you land at a campfire island, the fire will be out. Sometimes if I see an island in the distance and it's raining, I'll try and slow down to see if it stops before I get there. If you have some tinder, however, you can relight the campfire once the raining has stopped.

I don't think it's 100% but I'm pretty sure most of the campfire islands have a shelter you can sleep in. So if it's raining, and you get there, you can take a nap while waiting for the rain to stop and then head over to restart the fire.

Hope that helps!
Wow thanks, this helps a lot! I kept looking for little pits to make a fire in and all I got for my troubles was a bunch of ant bites. :(

Ouch! You're welcome! After I posted I thought about one other thing. Some of the biomes have practically endless rain. They're usually a bit later, but as you enter each region, it will tell you if it's going to rain a lot. Those campsites will be impossible to catch with a fire burning. Usually you'll have your stove on the raft by then, but I didn't want you to go to one of those places and wait for the rain to stop and be cursing my name. LOL.
