Nancy Drew Startup Error - "Action Not Supported"

For several of the older Nancy Drew games (including Danger on Deception Island), I receive this error popup with a black window behind it. Upon closing the popup the game exits.

InitDirectDraw() SetDisplayMode() DDERR_UNSUPPORTED Action not supported

This game worked on my Windows 7 computer for several days and then this problem cropped up. The only change is that some Windows updates were installed (my PC had been off-line for a while). Here is what I have tried from the suggestions I've found (none worked for me, but apparently worked for others:

• Uninstall and Reinstall
  
• Trouble Shoot Compatibility (on the exe)
  
• Run in Vista, XP, and 98 Compatability Mode
  
• Run as Admin in the Compatability Modes
  
• Adjusting the Game Config file
  
  I'm not sure what else to do. Has anyone encountered this issue and resolved it?

Remove HDMI cable if plugged in. It worked for me.
