Right now we use 1->0 for squad selection. How would you like the firing modes and other radial commands to be set up by default?
We can either do "o" for overwatch, "k" for kill nearest Genestealer ;-)
or
e.g. t,y,u,i,o for first, second, third etc option in the radial
(All configurable naturally)
I would suggest using QWERT / ASDFG / ZXCVB keys. They're all naturally next to the classic WASD movement keys (or camera pan keys for SHA) and it's where the majority of gamer's hands will rest.
Dawn of War II and Company of Heroes did it this way and it was very effective.
- Examples -
For the commo rose:
Z / C for left / right selection
X for entering a sub row of buttons (i.e. different fire modes) or choosing a selection
ALT for backing up to a previous row of buttons or cancelling a selection
For everything else:
(these are just examples)
R - reload
T - gun heat
F - overwatch
V - kill nearest target
SPACEBAR - end turn
CONTROL - hide UI
TAB - select next marine
~ TILDE - select previous marine
Since the camera panning and rotation is already using QWE and ASD, using all the buttons around those keys would make sense.
Considering "right and left keys" and sub menus, it would in the end be less tedious to just click through the selection with the mouse in the first place. The "action wheel" is only really useful for real-time games where you control your character with your mouse.
At the minimum, different firing modes and PSI abilities need to have their own shortcuts, as it will be very tedious to go through shortcut menus every time they need changing.
Only other way they would work without adding extra tedium, would be them to have a general button, and number keys to select the one we want from the sub-menu, for example "P" for PSI, and then 1-3 for the actual PSI ability. Of course the Terminator selection needs to be disabled while we are inside a menu.
I've only played a short while but I can say clicking just to attack a GS is more clicking than it really should be. Without moving you have to click on the firing button, click on which mode you want to select, then go back to where ever the GS was at and click on it. It may not seem like very much, and really it's not, but those little actions will add up.
I understand this is a strategy game and a slower one at that, I have no issue with that part. Wasted time and action however is a bane to games like this. Like when I play Civ 5, 2 buttons and boom, you're building a unit or building or researching new tech. It's fast and easy and you can get back to nuking Montezume because ♥♥♥♥ that guy.
- as stated above: fire modes - a default quick selection would help with the most common/click hungry actions (simple stormbolter shot -> select the terminator, mouse cursor on the target, press the key = BOOM)
- pan the camera to the closest/latest hostile contact (blip/GS)
- drop/use equipment (servo skull, etc.)
Also, it could be comfortable to center the camera on a terminator with a double-click (on the 3D model). Those are just simple suggestions really. I'm not deep into the game.
