The level design is worse so the difficulty factor is higher.
The "Gate Mechanic" is abused to the point you would have to be a saint not to think (sv_cheats_1, noclip). Even though it was obvious "how" to solve them by midgame I freely admit to noclipping around these speed bumps. Yes I get that they were put there to make the game harder but the game would have been just as good or better without 3/4ths of them.
I'll spend half an hour to an hour portaling every surface and using all these different items with different things and once that's done I'll just give up and noclip. I want to see what's going on with the story but it's not good that there are literal roadblocks.
It's worth working thru a couple of them just for the satisfaction, but once you beat one chapter you have pretty much beat them all. Have to admit the t-bar beam puzzles were enjoyable.

Honestly the levels are harder than normal Portal but once you know how to solve it they're all easy to do. At least up till Chapter 4. I really hate it when you see a solution but take forever trying to actually make it work and so far this game hasn't done that.
Unlike Portal 2, these are more like actual puzzles rather than some levels meant to entertain you while telling its story.
