Thanks for saving me, cristian. I installed the second of your two patches. And I wasn't sure what to do with the registry.sav file, because you said it should go in the "saves" folder, which didn't exist. So I put a copy in the game's root folder, then created a saves folder and copied the .sav there too. Seemed to work.
The cutscenes are a little choppy, but at least the game plays. Thank you!!
Have fun playing the game, getting them achivements :)
It would have been great if Double Fine would have provided the software OpenGL in the first place! It's hard to tell people now that they can at least play the Original version!
You should just save http://cristianadam.eu/assets/grim-fandango/registry.sav from your browser directly into Saves folder.
For some reason I din't think to zip registry.sav like I did for opengl32.dll :)
Our own internal testing of this found it to be a bit buggy and unstable, so not quite the silver bullet you might be hoping for, however it's definitely worth trying it out.
It might also be worth reporting any issues you find with these drivers here in case the OP has any idea how to fix them.
Also if you find this to work perfectly and manage a full playthrough with no issues, we'd love to hear about that too!
Actually you don't need the registry.sav file. Just wait for the mailbox animation to be rendered (takes a few minutes) and then just hit Backspace to switch to Original render mode.
If it's unstable, then I guess I got lucky. I had no problems with the registry.sav file either. I just followed the steps and it worked like a charm.
I might have been bummed about the audio if I had started playing it the day I bought it, but it had been sitting there for a few months and I'd given up hope of ever being able to play it. Having choppy audio for 5 minutes was a small price to pay. I'd forgotten how awesome this game is.
I need to make the Tip Jar[cristianadam.eu] section of my blog more visible :)
My specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Processor: Intel Pentium P6200 (dual-core, I believe)
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics (Pentium chip type). Can't tell what model, though. Probably outdated ones, since the Intel Driver Update Utility keeps failing to install the last versions of the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver.
Graphics Accelerator Driver Version: 8.15.10.2993. Again, Intel utility won't upgrade beyond this, likely because my laptop is outdated. When I tried to manually install an update beyond this, it reduced my resolution and messed up my graphics before I used a restore point to fix it. I'm currently trying to install a slightly earlier update, so we'll see.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: Graphics Accelerator Driver updated to 15.22.57.64.2827. Updating it further causes it to be reverted back to 8.15.10.2993. Tried running the game again, but it produced another dump log, with the same error message.

UPDATE 2: Using the CPU Caps Viewer you mentioned in your article, it's still saying I have OpenGL 2.1.0 - Build 8.15.10.2827. Even with the downloads in your article, it still returns this. Any advice, or should I just give up here and get a refund?
You need to copy http://cristianadam.eu/assets/grim-fandango/mesa_10_5_5_opengl32_pgo.zip in the same directory where GrimFandango.exe resides.
GPU Caps Viewer needs the same treatment, copy opengl32.dll where GpuCapsViewer.exe resides and then you should see for OpenGL "OpenGL 3.3 (Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.6, 128 bits) with 136 ext.)"
