Well, the game uses OpenGL, so it's not DX10 related thing.

I'd guess the deal is that Double Fine doesn't want to offer support for a windows version which isn't supported by Microsoft.

They actually ported this game to OSX and Linux. I'd say they respect their fans.

I believe it DOES work in XP, actually, they just have stated that they haven't tested it, but I'm pretty sure there's XP users in the DF forums who can play it.

Only if you have paid specifically for the extended support, which wasn't cheap. Normal consumers don't basically get that support since it costs so much...

If you pay, yes. They make specific patches for people who pay. You're looking at hundreds or thousands of dollars, per machine, per year. This is an option taken only by businesses with SERIOUS problems upgrading.
