"What fixed it for us, is having the host join first and save and then sleep, and then back out join lobby with you friend and join together. But we have to do this whenever it happens."

You may have to pick everything up and put it back down as the host.
simple solution:
dont continue a multiplayer save alone or else everyone gets the desync and needs to get the new save data information.
