Thanks for posting - the chests spawn in several locations and it's possible to miss one of them when walking around (I have to search the whole area more than once more often than I'd like to admit), so it's just a matter of running one more search or using treasure hunter's prism from your inventory.
As for the Galley Slave, he runs for the arena underground if a calamity is triggered while you are fighting him - that's when the area opens up, it's all by design.
