You should play how you want, but this game rewards being up close and personal more than ranged combat and although they can work in extremely close range. I don't recommend them in these conditions, minus Striga (does less damage at extremely close range), unless you know what you are doing and it takes more environmental awareness to maximize them. The game isn't that hard though, but I'm positive there are plenty of struggling players. I'd rather tell them to learn the weapon's strongest positions before they use them in more complex encounters where it's higher risk for smaller payout, but more fun imo.
At gnosis 4 every regular weapon, except Striga, is useless crap
Why? Because it is the only weapon which doesn't forces you to get close to your enemy and viable at any distance (if you have good aim ofc)
And not only weapons - skills and trinkets too: most of them are crap at G4
The Striga IS great. And it IS OP. It is VERY easy to use. It is not the only OP weapon. Other weapons need more technique to get the most out of them, but can be equally OP or even stronger once you know the mechanics.
Striga is S tier, half of the weapons A and other half B tier.
There are no rly bad weapons. You just have to shape your whole build (weapons/items, sometimes arcana or alchemy) to synergy with weapon.
Even if probably everyonecould agree that Striga is the best, the most broken weapon is Frostbite with 1 or 2 arcanas which can delete bosses in seconds. But Striga is just very universal allrounder.
What if you wont recieve that specific arcanas? Then your Frostbite is just waste
In any case, take solace in knowing there isn't a single complaint any of you have discussed on Steam that the devs hadn't already heard from me a thousand times :)
The bolt action rifle is amazing though, honestly one of the most satisfying guns I've used in a game.
Positioning is key but you can wreck groups of enemies with it if done so properly.
Even better if you get a grenadier in your face. Spread that love to everyone around him.
The way I play I don't feel weapons are necessity at all - and all because of the two spells and a ring - all of them very specific.
I can run whatever weapon(s) and everything, bosses included, just dissolves in 10 seconds max.
I wrote a detailed reddit guide half an year or so ago and I was recommending the same stuff to players that want to have fun.
You are incorrect - the most powerful item in the game IS a ring, paired with a specific arcana.
You can also use most of the weapons with very little exceptions, but you have to adjust your loadout to do that.
Oh - and I also play pretty much exclusively in point blank range of the enemies - that's how the build works.
And all the items you need is the Shadowmist Ring, Burning Stake, Storm Ball and the Shattered Soul skill fro the water arcana(which with the Prophecy of Water you can re-roll until you get it).
Also - aside of being the most effective way to play the game afaik - it's the most spectacular one, due to the 3 elements chaining together and creating an explosion of colors so beautiful that could make your eyes bleed if you play more than 2 hours straight :D
I can explain in details why and how this works so well, but it would take too much space so - just trust me it does.
And another great part about all that combo - delivers so much stagger and stun, that when you do 1v1 fights(bosses) they remain stunlocked pretty much - provided you got the stamina and the balls to fight everything in really close range.
