You can dodge ranged attacks and have it work too but I have dodged ranged attacks taht litterally grazed my body and it didnt count so its not entirely based on just how close you were to the attack.
The initiation of the dodge has to be when the bullet is close enough to be considered dodging it and its travel speed requires you to dodge when its outside of that range in order to actually dodge the attack.
Same goes for a melee attack, the attack has to be registerd kind of like a dark souls parry you have to be close enough and dodge at the right time also I am not sure if there is an internal cooldown on how often it can proc.
I used to use this ring until I decided the Ring Of Excreta was just better at doing the decay to an enemy, once its fully upgraded, but I since switched to Shadowmist Ring because you can fly and dash upward through the air, basically air dash at the flying spitting slam ball enemies and its a lot of fun.

Hey I noticed when using the Shadowmist ring that if I tried to dodge to the side, I would be force to dodge forward through the nearest enemy. Does that happen to you too? I hate not being in control of my movement so I gave that right up.
You should be able to dodge in any direction using the Shadowmist ring. Of course, if you don't indicate a direction the default is forward.
