It would be cool. But I think it's best if they focus on finishing the single player part first.

No, you don't. Not everything needs to have coop.
I'm not opposed to idea of it but devs have already made it clear that it is very slim chance at best. The amount of effort required for that is immense, especially for what wasn't ever designed in mind for that. And that is better spent elsewhere.

I feel like these posts are bait at this point, why you can't just research a bit before asking

I believe a 2-player co-op option would be a great addition. Having more than two players might disrupt the gameplay balance, but the ability to team up, similar to how it's done in Roboquest, would be a fantastic feature.

This is the correct take.

I've not got the game yet but I'll probably get it anyway. Love the look of the game. Watched a bit of Woolie's stream the other day to get a feel for what it's like.
The one thing that made me not get it right away is lack of co-op, as I do like playing this sort of thing with friends.
However I am more than happy that first an foremost the devs want to make sure the game is GOOD and has a solid foundation.
I'd much rather that than they tack on features just for the sake of it.

We are not ruling out co-op in the future but to be perfectly honest, the chances for it are very slim.

The reason is that co-op trivializes a lot of our gameplay the same way it does in any Souls game. Imagine an enemy that has the only vulnerability on their back. It's a challenge for the lone player: you have to maybe freeze the enemy to quickly circle around them, or you need to sneak around them using the environment. With co-op, however, one player aggros the enemy while the other just fires at their back. Boom, done in five seconds.

Actually, to drive the point home, in the latest update we have added a feature where you can call the ghost of a Fallen Preyer to serve as a bait for enemies. Your "coop" AI friend. Suddenly, for those few seconds, the game is a shooting gallery...

Is this unsolvable? Of course not. But it works best when you design with coop in mind from the start. Meanwhile, we designed Witchfire as a single player game, during which you often take pause to think of the next move, consult the map, spend you sweet time in the Hermitorium to level up, research gear, apply Prophecies etc.

Also, the game is designed in a way that makes it hard to unleash all four elements (Freeze, Decay, Burn and Shock) on enemies at the same time, because that is an insane combo. With two players, though, it's super easy.

To sum it up, we are 100% focused on making the best possible Single Player game, without even thinking what it would mean for co-op. After that's done, we might take a look at co-op, but chances of that happening are very slim. A great Single Player experience is our priority.

From the Dev.

Coop makes any game better.
But in the current design i see a lot of problems with how some mechanics work.

What i think is that the industry at the moment lacks a game thats like Hunt Showdown with Extraction but in Coop Only.
Kinda like Darktide or Vermintide, but with open maps, inventory and an item economy, but all in coop and you know, with demons, undead or something like that.

I would kill for a good Medieval Fantasy Dungeon Crawler (with some open spaces) where i can loot the heck out with a friend and drag the stuff up to the surface, craft stuff, customize weapons etc.
Give it magic, melee combat and Muskets and im jizzing all over it.

But as of now, we dont have such a game. We have several games that roughly go that direction, but then fail in one area. Dark and Darker has PvP focus, Hunt Showdown too and is lacking actual items, Witchfire lacks coop and items and so on.

My current hope is a game i cant recall the name of, that should be a third person melee focussed Medieval fictional game with extraction and coop. (Edit: I found it, its called Blight: Survival)
But it receives sparse info and i kinda fear it will end up being unpolished, casualized garbage that looks cool from the outside but is bad when you play it.
Yet, Blight Survival is literally the only game filling this gap.

In that sense, i agree, Witchfire NEEDS coop, but wont get it.
It needs coop because the audience needs a game like this with coop.
A good game that ticks all the boxes.

You're right not every game needs coop. But in this instance it would benefit the game more if you can at least have one friend play with you. With no campaign or story to really get a single player experience you're just shooting things by yourself. I've already seen quit a bit of people say since a game like this isnt coop then they wont bother with it. From a bussiness standpoint they dropped the ball on that because for the time and money spent on the game they are missing out on even more money.

Plus you can have a game be coop and still deliver a single player experience pretty easily. Guess people will just have to wait on modders to modify coop into the game

Not everything requires co-op, You "People" are strange, making demands on solid Singleplayer games to have co-op... Co-op ain't everything! Learn to actually play by yourself *Wink*

Yeah because the social people are weird and the anti-social totally normal. Got it dude. All hail the basement dweller.
