It is complex because you don't have the time to figure it out. There are a lot of things going on (trying to kill you) and in the middle of that you need to figure out a mechanic that kills you close to instantaneously.
When the calamity triggers, the sky will turn red and a large tornado like swirl will appear, that swirl is the 'catalyst'. You should be able to see the catalyst by looking up at the sky.
You can end the calamity in 2 ways, the first is to run over to the catalyst and destroy the skulls circling it. If these skulls hit you with their projectile attacks your sanity will drain, but they're not hard to dodge.
The second way to end the calamity is to wait for it to finish spawning which takes around 30 seconds, at this point a new objective will appear under you calamity bar, usually something like "kill 15 phantoms" and an enemy type will start to swarm you. If you kill enough to complete the objective, the calamity ends. If the spawned enemies are too hard for you to fight, you can still run to the catalyst to destroy it that way.
The sanity bar itself will drain slowly over time, and will also be drained if you're damaged by calamity enemies. You'll periodically take damage as it drains. You can actually survive the sanity bar hitting 0 if you have healing, it's not a guaranteed death. The first time I got a calamity I couldn't find the catalyst, so I ran around for a good 3 minutes looking for it and my sanity hit 0 once or twice.
Honestly the calamity mechanic is much easier to manage now than it used to be. It was meant to be hard to predict, the witch is trying to catch you off-guard at your weakest. It's much more predictable now and that takes away some of the fear around triggering it.
Hope the devs do improve the tutorial on this. I stood around the tutorial glyph of the calamity trying to look for any changes, whatever a calamity was to understand it more, spent about 3 minutes jumping around looking for it cause it sounded pretty important, but gave up cause I couldn't find out what it was. Since then I ran out a portal every time this was triggered for my entire 7.2 hour playtime so far.
Thanks for the explanation! I'll try facing it next time.
Yea, Im with you there. Its that or have the tutorial about the calamity on the second map, but I feel that having it on the first map makes more sense as it better prepares the player for the game ahead.
