Love the game, but the calamity mechanic is too much. (Edit: they aren't bad, I'm dumb)
First island you have 5-10 enemies per encounter, second island about 20-30 per encounter. With gnosis, lvl 20+, and possibly some levels added into luck, you regularly get 50+ enemies per encounter on the second island due to the calamity mechanic. It's not like the calamities are easy enemies either, you'll get 20 elites chasing you around, it doesn't make sense.

I hate when difficulty is overly nerfed, but this seriously isn't manageable with the amount of ammo and health you are given. Only so much you can do when you are surrounded by elites and special enemies that can spam you with AOE effects. Am I missing something or are these events just a pain in the ass? It wouldn't bother me as much if it didn't happen every single run.

Edit: Since this is still getting traction, you just need to run to the brown smoke thing and shoot the 4 skulls, all the enemies disappear after. Also, if a map layout is giving you trouble make sure to buy the item from the shopkeeper that rerolls your ascension to the witch without leveling you up. The game becomes much, much more manageable with these two pieces of knowledge in mind.

I usually get like one or two calamities per run, unless I try to trigger it on purpose. You trigger it when you reach 5/5 of those eyes in top left corner. They add up when you make mistakes, like triggering traps, taking damage, picking up cursed items. You can minimize the calamities by avoiding those actions as best as you can.

When the calamity gets triggered, you can seek out the catalyst (it's a big skybeam, look around). Get to the catalyst, it has some skulls floating around it, shoot the skulls, calamity ends (or gets prevented completely if you're quick enough). Ending the calamity gets you ton of good rewards and a free portal. There's one type of rare calamity with no catalyst, you need to fight that one normal way, but it's not particularly difficult.

I don't know what you mean by 50+ enemies per encounter due to the calamity mechanic. Are you triggering the calamity with every enemy group and fighting through it? It sounds like you're making it needlessly difficult for yourself.

Thanks! I didn't realize there was a catalyst.

Pay attention to the top left corner, you always get some instructions there during these kinds of events. You're not the only one missing it, after watching lots of content creators ignoring all the tasks I already made a suggestion to devs to somehow improve visibility of these task/quest instructions.

one easy mistake that lends to calamity is not paying attention to cursed items, those are huge, if you are not ready to deal with enemy spam try to clear those collectables before you take em, second island is where the game truly begins imo thats why you have this feeling of "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ whats going on!!!"

i highly recommend a change of aproach from now on, try to fall back, dont hang around in one spot for too long because the AI will start to spam ice granades on your cover, ALWAYS keep looking at your map more importantly your 6, if there are monsters spawning at your 6 you HAVE to deal with those first because thats your escape route 100% of the time when things will get nasty+

if i could change something i wanted to make the little radar bigger and i wanted to be able to choose where to position it, because corner left feels so weird for me

How am I supposed to deal with calamities in the middle of shield bearer boss fight?

Edit: I ended up beating the shield bearer without the calamity spawning, guess I just got unlucky the first few tries. This is definitely a case of me complaining without learning game mechanics.

i know it is frustrating but i believe you did the most cool stuff right now, you stopped complaining grinded your butt and broke that wall, now you are a much better player than before and i bet you would pull it off again if you tried a second time

PER RUN?

How? In my 20-ish hours of play, I've triggered two calamities total.

The game gets quite intense on higher gnosis levels:). I am running gnosis 4, and on Castle map you get pummeled with all sorts of ugly things.

There's an item that forces it to happen and doubles the rewards- I like having one spawn naturally and then forcing a second to get lots of feathers before I go slap the boss around and leave.

Can certainly agree there. They're just a bastard when they spawn during a boss fight or a vault run (But luckily zone one doesn't deal with them. Seemingly)

Currently calamities are way to un-calamitous to even matter.
They're more like farming points than something that spells trouble.
Palumtra Oct 14, 2024 @ 3:21am
Aside from the Galleon, calamities are very easy once you're geared they drop feathers which means if you farm them you can deck yourself out with arcana.
There are also items (Four Leaf Clover) and other effects (Fallen Preyer: Elias) that can help you to make it easier or to avoid it.
