Can't get black grass or mushrooms to grow
I went down to black soil, and found nada in 2 huge locations. They had some dry areas too. Then I brought black soil back to my base and made a dry dark room of black soil in a 1x1 row system. Nada. It's dark. It's dry. What am I missing? Gone through 3 day and night sequences so far. I thought the mushrooms needed a dry environment? Does the black grass need water?

Would really like to make the MK IV before U get too old to care, lol.

spontaneous grow is very rare, it's 100x faster to find 1 of them, plant it in your field and let it spread

Yeah, but you have to find one, haha. :)

Everytime I do that, it just dies and does not spread. It was on the original black soil underground, no lights, no water although there was some water nearby but the ground was dry.

you really have to run fast from the mushroom to avoid lighting it too long - or better, remove your own lamp. And how can you be sure the ground is dry? If there is water nearby it can infiltrate into the ground without you seeing it. Be sure to place concrete block or a step to block water

When the dark soil is dry, the 'top layer' of it looks different than the wet dark soil. Thats how I figured it was dry. Unless I was hallucinating when I saw that...

no, the top layer color change show if there is water above the block, not water inside it

lol some "water detection glasses" could be useful ^^

Does the water ever dry out? Or is it permanent until I break the dirt (and the water gushes out), and replace it with dry dirt?

Dig a hole below it so the water can trickle from it. Be sure there is no rock to stop the infiltrated water

I flew down the chasm until i spotted a patch of black dirt and i dug out rows and in 2 seconds they started popping up 1 after 1 just as I gave up on it.

Black plants die very quickly when there is light, just turn off your light while you dig into the black dirt (you might fire a few shot from time to time). Later if you come just to harvest them, you can keep your light open as it's very fast, but when you dig tunnels it takes too much time, enough to kill them
(but even if you killed them all, they will eventually grow back. And if just one survived, it will spread again very fast)

Oh universe! And i thought, the black soil needs to have an exact humidity level for the mushrooms to grow. .... Never made the connection with light lest the characters flashlight. So all the harvests on my mushroom farm were pure luck! ^^
