For black ones the easiest way is to make several row of 1-thick black dirt. For others plants it wouldn't work as it let the water go away but that's exactly what we want in this case. Just be sure there are no water/trickle coming from above.
Just to give some data about spontaneous grow: for every dirt that can make a plant grow with the life-conditions ok, there are 0.033% of chance that the plant spontaneously grow, every 20s. That means (if my calculations are correct) that if you have 100 black dirt blocks, there is about 3.2% of probablity you get one spontaneous grow, every 20s. And 69% of probablity you got it after 12min (= one day/night cycle), 90% after 2 days.
You could make it a bit further away from your base (so it is not broken by monsters) and without backwalls and concrete everywhere - just one concrete or rock line on the top for the water, and a chaft on either side so water doesn't flow into it
