So after all both endings are depressing :(
At the end you can see a city and rays of light - that're inhabitants of Silence being restored.
the final feeling is bittersweet. Everything is gorgeous, but there is so little of it... only the bare bones.
I really doubt the choices have any real effect beyond dialog
Yes, we know they are restored, but I would like to see the typical scenes during credits showing what happens to them.
edit:
Ugh that's disappointing, nothing changed the outcome of the two endings. Given that the first game had a lot more content and Sadwick ventured many more places, I am kind of saddened to see that the sequel, despite it being such a gorgeous looking game, would sacrifice so much of the world in exchange of that style.
I think Noah is actually alive in both endings. In the Smash the Mirror ending, during the part where Renie is lying on him and crying, his hand starts to move, which I interpreted to mean that he was alive after all. Otherwise, there wouldn't be much of a point to adding that detail.
No, I mean after that scene. Its after she shakes him and his hand falls to his side. While she's crying, his hand twitches and then starts to clench briefly.
The part I'm talking about starts around 26:33 in this video (which shows the ending, so don't watch if you haven't beaten the game yet, anyone!):

I did the "mend the mirror" ending first, and I was completely happy with it right until the point after the credits when Noah opened his eyes. I saw that and figured "oh, I guess you can save them both!" so I immediately went back and smashed the mirror, only to have no such luck.
From a logical standpoint, Noah's fate should be the same in both endings, because nothing you do in the game as Reenie can be seen to have an impact on it, and there are no other variables at play which we're made aware of. That's what makes it a bit irritating to me; it's purely a plot device, to try to give the endings more impact.
Wow, you must have a keen eye to have caught that. I never would have spotted it if it hadn't been pointed out.
It was actually just because I wound up seeing that ending twice. I did the Shatter the Mirror ending first, but skipped the credits. So, when I then did the Mend the Mirror ending, and saw the little scene at the end of the credits, I was afraid I might have missed something the first time, and redid that first ending again. It was during that second viewing that I noticed it.
