Steam having competition isn't a bad thing to keep it on their toes, but Epic Games and their crappy store go about it in the absolute worst ways. Yes, worse than Uplay and Origin. They buy out some games for exclusivity rights, or making a game free to attract people to their platform instead, but with how their crappy platform is, that's shooting themselves and the game devs in the feet repeatedly.
No forums, no reviews, no input from players, just buy the game and shut up, don't even tell us what you dislike about our platform because we don't care. We especially don't care if the game you bought is faulty.
My own personal viewpoint on this, as a die-hard Oddworld fan, one of my friends says that if EG bought exclusivity of it on their store for PC, then they've paid the devs well enough to practically call it successful. But I look at like, yeah, maybe they did, but they'll also report actual sales numbers back to Oddworld Inhabitants. If they made the PC version exclusively EGS, which everyone hates and nobody decides to buy for, they'll go back to OH saying "So yeah, your game didn't sell well, we're not gonna bother to help funding more games from you guys, this was a failure."
And I want more Oddworld. Frankly I'd be entirely onboard paying double the price just to bypass EGS and get the game by itself.
That logic could very well be entirely wrong of course, that's just where my head is at for this game in particular. I got plenty of other unrelated reasons to want EGS to burn.
Principally speaking, Steam should have competition to keep it on it's toes. Also principally speaking Epic believes in actual market competition in the same way all those Hedge Fund Managers short-selling Gamestop stock believe in the virtues of freely trading stock for personal prosperity...
...till a bunch of schlub nobody reddit people beat them at their own game and lost them billions. Then it's "somebody stop these guys from outmaneuvering us!"
Because EGS' "crusade" is hypocritical garbage and you deserve better.
Bonus: this isn't the first time in this 30-ish year history that Oddworld Inhabitants have graced the franchise with platform-exclusive nonsense- also to similarly poor effect overall on the series/franchise.
I'll repeat my earlier assertion there: if they'd have asked me to pay $20 more for the game to keep it out of Sweeny Tim's greasy swamp-ass cheeks, I'd have paid it happily.
At least then it'd be me supporting a property I appreciate.
I guess that explains the epic store deal, just like Predator Hunting Grounds, Rune 2, Total War Troy and many... many others, this is just one more half assed project that decided to grab the money guarantee instead of delivering a product.
Scummy devs, i suppose =/
Dont be silly, one is a rent service, the other is giving the game away for free on release day. Your comparison doesnt hold. How many games got released straight to a digital rent service on release day? Very few and most of them then were semi-shovelware.
Destructoid has as much credibility as IGN or Gamespot buddy, quoting them doesnt do anyone any favors.
Instead of that, how about popping in on the Oddworld discord to get a pulse of the community?
Again you miss the point, a old game going to a subscription service is fine, a brand new game going to it on release day is not. Please stop being silly.
Ok buddy, you clearly didint played the game, since you keep linking to other people's opinions instead of your own.
Guess your not looking very well? Theres people talking about it early today, part of the "release problems", there was a bit of discussion on it before the mention of the in-game cheat discussion.
As for your insistence on comparison apples & oranges, again... not really, most games that go to gamepass are at the VERY least a few months old (and thats usually because they have not sold well).
Going on to it on day 1 is usually not a good sign for the dev.
As for your last point, i belive our opinions here are probably worth more than either a bias gaming review site or a twitch streamer.
Of course, most people will hopefully watch gameplay footage or grab a "demo" to test it out before buying it.
Look friend, the discord there is also not praising the game to high heavens, its not like we are gonna rage at the devs in a discord, right? Theres polite criticism and thats what i also did.
Even Rocko, whos a regular since the N&T days has pointed out some technical and gameplay aspects that are problematic when the game was being showed off.
I been there on & off for the good chunk of the last 2 years (give or take), dont go telling me what the "Pulse of the community" is. I been critical of N&T too.
Speaking of which, i saw your a lurker on the discord, so what does that mean? you just keep watching we chat and dont engage at all?
Thou, selling their fans to EGS meat factory was not the most noble deed of game's developer.
Unfortunately the game crashes on start up. It randomly launches and works, but 90% of the time it crashes upon start with the message that the programm has stopped working.
Too bad EGS doesn't have forums where one could ask, like Steam does. And unfortunately i already played more then 2 hours, so i can't issue a refund.
Not sure if its the GAME or EGS- honestly i don't care. Lorne obviously doesn't learn from his mistakes, might have aswell have made soulstorm Playstation exclusive, like he did for Xbox with Munch. I though learned the valuable lesson to stick to Steam. Sure great thing, EGS does not have a review system like Steam to warn people. I've been Lorne's fan since i was like 9, but today i lost all my trust in Oddworld Inh.
I always love these “help I bought these games on EGS but unsurprisingly EGS has none of the features I commonly use so how do I add it to a client with the features I need” posts. People gotta learn I suppose
The answer is to stop buying on EGS without any honest user reviews, Shopping Cart, Security Features, Forums, Activity Feed and more and more. Besides its login issues every few hours and its anti-consumer bahavior by taking games hostage - stop getting blinded by your pink glasses and actually start thinking whats best for YOU as a consumer. They choose money over you and you throw away money like its nothing.
EGS is the COVID19 of PC Market and you should not support such anti-consumer behavior. Don't get treated like crap and think its okay. Wait for it to come on the superior launcher (Steam) or don't support it. Refund if you can.
