This isn't a bar. That isn't even a fair comparison and you are just using a strawman argument.
"Well, Hitler also drank water so how do you explain this, huh?"
Steam does not save the user's DoB to their servers. This is why you have to enter it constantly any time you look at a game which is age-restricted. Within the last few years, they save the date you enter as a cookie on your computer, but this isn't saved to their servers. If you log in on a new device, Steam will ask you for your DoB again when you open age-restricted content.
The developer could create an age prompt which appears at the first launch of the game. The user's input could be saved to the game's save data and the game can filter content accordingly.
There is nothing stopping the end user from lying about their age, this would be just as useless as the "yes/no" prompt in 18+ servers.
If Steam cannot offer this functionality in their SDK, then it's completely down the the parent to police their child, but of course, we already know they're not.
Most parents are just going to look at a few images, and the trailer, and just say "this is cute for lil' Timmy", unbeknownst to the identity politics and player base included with the game.
The game has some filters now, and even a chalk toggle, but they're not on by default; You have to neutron activate yourself to actually find them at the bottom.
Hypothetically though, even if Valve did offer age checking and profile verification within their SDK, who's to say there won't be a bypass mod? GDScript byte code id being researched because of this game, full decompiled/recompiled. The game is blown open.
There's no real way to police this, and the developer couldn't even handle his own Discord server getting too big, not to mention he apparently doesn't even check Steam forums.
If you see something bad, all you can do is take screenshots and send them to Valve, let them handle it hopefully; If you're a parent and reading this, remember that Steam has a TWO HOUR refund policy... PLAY PURCHASES before your child, don't just glance surface level.
My two cents.
Common furry community L
Wait until you find out who made the game
Yeah, I sadly only found out way after two hours playtime had passed. Well aware.
I'm kind of tired of the base level negative rumors against the community. Not to say that there aren't bad actors, but that's a universal saying for any community.
I don't wanna speak for others, but I've literally joined only 18+ servers and I've seen more normal conversations with decent people than anything remotely sexual, and even then I never saw any flirting or ERP. Also It's a little nuts to imply that a "gay" title is harmful to children. And I haven't seen a gr__ming story, let alone a bad experience come out of this yet.
Not to say there shouldn't be moderation, I think some better attention should be paid to that, such as more involved age checking ingame to just make sure, but there really is no good solution in this game as of now. Responsibility shouldn't just fall on a parent (though we do need actually attentive parents nowadays).
Is it that hard nowadays to activate a simple few brain synapses to look in a simple settings menu to use a toggle?
I'm sadly not surprised at this. Decompilers for Godot games have existed for a while. I notable remember using one to make and play mods on Cruelty Squad, so its not too surprising that you can also crack into everything inside of WF.
Also, I don't blame the developer since from what I've heard, this was just a basic ass gamejam game that got popular over night. Similar thing happened to Friday Night Funkin', basic gamejam game that got extremely popular overnight and eventually lead to a lot chaos over the years.
Yep, kids just ruins every game and then everyone has to bend their knees for them. There shouldn't be kids online without supervision, period. And is the fault of the parents for not checking on what their kids do online.
I'm just really tired of kids getting into ♥♥♥♥ they could not possibly understand and ruining everything.
Im perfectly fine with it as long as I can separate myself from them, and I'm not blamed if a kid ♥♥♥♥♥ up. But I agree kids can make ♥♥♥♥ a damn mess and I'm pretty tired of it. I wish it were easier to separate adults from them to make things actually safe.
Yep, like how Garry's Mod is a mod for Half-Life 2, an M rated game, which you would think would be full of boomers. But nope! Is full of annoying kids. And because they are always the most toxic people online, a lot of awesome projects, campaigns and addons just get abondoned because the creators get fed up with all the kids constantly harassing them.
Garry's Mod is my go-to-game for replaying old source games, but time and time again I see that my favorite projects get abandoned or even straight up taken down because of all the kids that dominate the workshop platform.
And to think about it, that's not the only game where kids just entirely ruin a game's workshop and/or an entire community. Heck, even games aimed at kids like A Hat in Time or Rivals of Aether has some of the most toxic people around the workshop and just spitting all the insults and harassment they can in comments and forums because they know their parents are too busy watching TV or doing literally anything else but take care of them.
Why would you gift your little brother a chat room? Are you nuts?
