If AI planes are turned on in FSX, they will still still show up even in a JoinFS server. That is part of the reason people use it instead of the default FSX multiplayer. It is more important for a JoinFS server that humans fly there so we can see a few human planes as well as the AI planes. :-)

i usually have 2 PC's each running a user / AI setup... driving this process, as my AI will only be seen when near the respective PC's USER aircraft

Wow I have never heard of FSOpen until now. Apparently it hasn't been updated since 2015.

My understanding is that JoinFS there are different servers but the aircraft of different servers can all see each other. In addition you can see your own AI aircraft - something that is not possible with the current Steam multiplayer. I don't know if for FSOpen you can see aircraft from other servers. In addition, it seems you need to upgrade to a Pro version to get more than 10 users in one server.
