To be fair, it's not like topographic data has changed all that much over the last 6 years. It has a bit more LOD in certain places than FreeMeshX. The download size and price tag does make it an add-on for geological purists.

They do different things, actually. This is a mesh pack, which enhances 3D terrain. FTX Global makes the terrain look prettier. They can both work together. As for which one would be better, I don't hav either, but if I can buy only one, I would go for FTX and get the only-slightly-inferior FreeMeshX.
You need to add whatever mesh you are using to the Scenery Library using the FSX in-game settings, and move it to the top of the order. For FreeMeshX, make sure the Patches folder is on the very top of the Scenery Library.
If you are still having trouble with FreeMeshX and not FS Global 2010, search for a thread on FreeMeshX or, failing that, create a new thread so this doesn't go way off topic.
