Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Can you play it with mouse and keyboard and have actuall fun with it?
Or will it be really janky or barelly playable?

As long as you set it up and just DON'T fly a Helicopter, lol x

Microsoft designed FSX to be accessible to all players. Mouse and keyboard is a usable mode, especially if you choose an easy flight model and the automatic rudder assist. Expect to use the keyboard keys for directional inputs and the mouse to operate cockpit instruments and the game menus. There is also a toggle that lets you operate the virtual flight yoke with your mouse. (I remember that as feeling janky.)

FSX also accepts an XBox controller as a peripheral. I'll try my Logitech F310 gamepad tonight as a test. I've always played FSX with a MS Sidewinder joystick so TBH I'm not really familiar with other input modes.

Update: the gamepad (Logitech F310) is easy to fly with. I completed two takeoffs and landings with the Cessna 172, learning the controls 'on the fly.' I still recommend getting a joystick though.

Yes you can have fun with it. Make sure you bind your essential controls within reach of your hand for quicker access. Might have to do combo key like ctrl+"_" Try it out and practice.
