Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Whats the difference?
So I was just wondering what the difference is between the regular edition, and the Steam Edition?

I had some random crashing issues with my box edition on Win 8.1 that I didn't have on XP. That is what prompted me to get the updated version.

I have both versions and there isn't any visible differences. I do get a slight improvement with fps with the Steam edition even though both are set exactly the same.

I was pleasently surprised to find that both share the same collection of Saved flights and the Flight logs are also shared. If I fly in the boxed version the flight log will appear in both and if I save the flight it also shows up in the Steam Edition.

I have a large collection of aircraft in my Boxed version so I simply copied the ones I wanted and pasted them into the Steam edition and they worked exactly the same.

The Steam Edition is more compatible with windows 7 & 8, and it's being recompiled so that it may run more smoothly.

The jury is still out on whether or not Dovetail Games has the wherewithal to stick with it.

Then you have a problem. The saved flights and logs are not shared since the registry entry's are different for each version of FSX and the files are installed in different <My Documents> folders.

Sorry, your wrong. FX10 Steam addition did not add a new file to my Document folder. It uses the one that has been there for years. For sure, they do use seperate registry entries but that has no bearing on where they put their saved games.

It certainly isn't a problem. I like it that way.

Fix your quotes above, you have them backwards. I did not say sorry your wrong, YOU DID. I am the one that said you had a problem.

You may like it that way but it does not change the fact that FSX box version and FSX Steam are 2 different simulators and do not share the Log files and the Save files. Sharing the Log files can cause a file to corrupt and sooner or later FSX or FSX:SE is not going to start.

Do you think the problems might be related with your other post?

I have no idea. :)

When I installed FX10SE my boxed version FX10 was not installed. I had uninstalled it do to some problem causing it not to load. I was going to reinstall it but instead I installed FX10SE.

The logs, added aircraft and Saved Flights were still on my hard drive. FX10 Uninstall does not erase them and shouldn't.

I ran FX10SE several times and each time it went through loading the install and other files.
It didn't actually try and reinstall the whole program but I had to click each window before it would eventually start the actual program.

I noticed then that the log book and my saved files were from my boxed version. Mind you, the box version wasn't even installed at this point.

A day leter I re-installed my boxed version.

So no conflict could exist since SE was already using my old files.

In addition there are more crossovers. I've noticed that if I run FX10SE while in the Pilot Review and then exit, my FX10 Boxed will startup in that same menu regardless of what mode it was in when I exited it. The reverse is also true.

So they both must be using the same startup config or something.

Well Dovetail did say they tried to completely seperate them but these things do exist.

Do you have both FS10's installed? Do you experience this? Do you have 2 seperate log files and 2 saved game files?

As long as they continue to operate without a hitch it's fine with me.
Thanks for your input.

Steam edition supposedly runs better, and also has ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DLC from Dovetail Games which everyone should ignore.

That is the problem. NEVER install the FSX box version after you installed FSX:Steam.

There are 2 types of install. The 1st is a single FSX Steam version install and the 2nd is a box version of MS-FSX side by side install which you have.

When the user installs the Steam edition first than installs the box FSX-MS version, the box FSX MS version will overwrite many of the FSX Steam files. This includes the registry entry's, scenery.cfg, fsx.cfg, dll.xml, exe.xml, etc.

The Reason?
If FSX Steam does not see the MS FSX version then it uses the same folders and file names. When you install the box version it over writes the FSX steam files so now things are getting shared. You will also have startup issues since FSX Steam is confused on what is trying to start.

If the Box FSX version is already on the computer then FSX Steam makes new entry's in the registry and adds new folders and files so there is no sharing (including additional My Documents).

FSX Steam should have never used the same file names and folders that MS FSX had used.

Do you have both FS10's installed? Do you experience this? Do you have 2 seperate log files and 2 saved game files?

Many developers and users have multiple versions of Flight Sim on the same computer.

I have FS2002, FS2004, Box FSX/Acceleration, FSX:Steam, P3D version 1.4, P3D version 2.5 and MS Flight. Each version has its own set of Folders and files for Logs and Save. My Box MS-FSX version was already on my computer when I installed FSX Steam so Steam made new folders and file names that differ from MS-FSX.

I have the FSX box on my computer right now. Does the Steam version of FSX have updated airports aka. SeaTac 3rd runway etc. I never had the acceleration pack, does the Steam version include the acceleration pack with the F-18?

FSX Steam has the Acceleration pack which includes the F/A-18 (military jet), EH-1O1 (helo), P-51 (racer variant).

Many airports were updated such as Istanbul, Templeof, Edwards Airforce base, Albuquerque, Key West, Detroit, Boston, San Francisco, parts of Reno, etc.

Additional global scenery BGL's (5 total) that adds 337 scenery objects,

All total Acceleration adds and overwrites 27,280 files that include APX (newer airport files), BRX (newer extrusion bridges), CVX (newer airport grass, flattens, roads, landclass and vector shapes), OBX (newer scenery objects).

When FSX was released many airports had not been updated such as Seattle. You can download several different free KSEA at

Ok, I bit the bullet. On a side note my peak download speed was 11.7MB. I plugged in my ethernet cable. I have hardline connection that usually maxes out at 5-6MB. I miss the multiplayer aspect of the game. I am a professional at landing competitions.
