You need an addon file called FSUIPC, it enables you to download Just Flight, Aerosoft and my favourite Qualitywings amongst other addons by FSdream team.
I am always weary of third party addons on Steam, it can cost alot to find the addon wont work.

A good FOC plane is Just Flights 757 Freemium, you can also download a lot of liveries for it.

You don't need FSUIPC to download addons. You may need it to run particular addons.

Also want to note that there are many, many free addon aircraft available at Avsim.com and Flightsim.com. Most are likely to work w/ the Steam version of FSX.

You don't need programs or anything. Modding FSX in general is as simple as a drag and drop.
Airplanes, are located in the SimObject folder of your FSX installation. Any plane you download, just dump the plane's folder in the SimObject\Planes directory.
If you don't want to go through that process... Get freeware planes from Rikoooo, they pack up planes in installers that do the job for you. Payware products are most likely installed automatically too.

You might have to copy and paste some gauges, effects or sounds to the gauges, effects or sounds folder of FSX, but most makers of free aircraft explain this in the packages when you download them.

Payware products may or may not work -- ones that were released before Steam's version existed may or may not work. Before you spend your money on a payware aircraft, check around that it works in Steam. There are several threads in the Avsim forum about which addons work and which do not.
