Installing ORBX FTX scenery
Hello. New here with a problem. I have uninstalled FSX Acceleration and installed FSX-SE on the basis that I have seen people running FSX-SE with ORBX scenery installed. So I know it can be done but for the life of me I don't know how.

I was hoping that when I ran the ORBX installer I would get the option to point it at the FSX-SE folder location but I don't. All it wants to do is install to the default FSX folder location and it doesn't give me the option to change it.

Does anybody know of a reliable work around?

Regards

Phil F.

Hi blackJacket, I had a lot of issues installing FTX Global in my FSX-SE because of the same problema you are having, this is all what I had to do:

I had to download and install a registry tool to tell my system the path of the FSX-SE (...\steamapps\common\fsx just like zack told you above me) and with that I could install FTX global in the correct FSX-SE folder.

In order to use FTX Central, I had to edit almost all XML files inside the ORBX folder created during installation and change all the paths that have Microsoft\FSX to Microsoft\FSX-SE inside these XML files, it is easier if you rename the folder \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE to FSX, run FTX Central and when finish rename the folder back to FSX-SE.

You also need to have the scenery.cfg file inside \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE or FTX Central will display a message that the scenery.cfg file is missing and, finally I had to copy this scenery.cfg to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX-SE folder because this is the scenery.cfg file that the simulator actually uses after installing everything with FTX Central.

In conclusion: a lot of things to do in order to install only FTX Global in my steam edition, it is working now but it took me a lot of time and helps to get here.

Hope it works for you.

The main problem is because the installer is still seeing your original install of FSX, remove that thoroughly including any registry entries and it installs and works fine, but yeah in it can be a lot of work but it is worth it....

Thankyou everybody. When I run the installer again should I expect it to automatically find MSFSX or MSFX-SE?

I found this and it worked for me:

"This is for people who have both FSX box edition and FSX SE, and to an extent for people that have deleted their legacy FSX but who are still having issues pointing the installers towards FSX:SE

After many hours pulling my hair and trying to get this to work I believe I have finally figured it out. Before I start I want to point out some important locations and fact.
FSX boxed and FSX:SE are designed to work while both are installed. Hence you will have 2 different folders named "FSX" and "FSX-SE", containing your sceneries config. They are located at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\.

You also need to understand that at the end of this process you will have 2 Orbx installations and 2 different FTCentral.exe. So when you will need to start FTXCentral be sure not to use a desktop shortcut but to navigate to your Steam ORBX folder and start it from there (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\FSX\ORBX\Scripts\FTXCentral), that will make sure you are starting the right FTXCentral.
Last, it is a good idea to run FTXCentral in admin mode (right click and run as administrator) as it is located within "program files (x86)"
The registry hack was pointed out by JRobinson at fsdevelopper forums and kindly provided to me by jim F on those forums (thanks).
Also do this at your own risk. It seems to be ok on my computer and until an official switcher is released by orbx there isnt much you can do...

NOW follow those steps.

1) Start regedit (start menu>type regedit in the search)
2) Backup your whole registry. Right click on computer and export
3) Navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\microsoft games\flight simulator\10.0 and change the value of setupPath (after writing the old path for reference) to point to your Steam FSX (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\FSX). From now on wether you are using or installing into your steam FSX you must have this reg entry. If you decide to use your legacy FSX you only have to revert to your old setting.
4) Install your Orbx Region/scenery. It should now see the correct path to FSX SE
5) Close FTXCentral
6) navigate to your new Orbx directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\FSX\ORBX)
7) edit those 2 files : script/FTXSettings.xml and script/FTXCentral/FTXSettings.xml and change "<SceneryCFGLocation>Microsoft\FSX</SceneryCFGLocation>" to "<SceneryCFGLocation>Microsoft\FSX-SE</SceneryCFGLocation>"
8) run FTXConfigurator.exe to update your library
9) run FTXCentral, check that your scenery library is the new one
10) Fly FSX SE and enjoy your Orbx scenery :)..................."

Hi BlackJacket6,

I followed your instructions to the letter, and still I get a message box that I must click OK several times before getting into FSX-SE:

"Scenery.cfg file error. Remote scenery directory () in scenery not found. Click OK to continue."

When I run FTXConfigurator.exe nothing visible happens. Is that this way?

Any idea what it could be?

Best,

I ran the registry repair tool and pointed the install to the steam edition. For some reason had to do this twice, but it finally worked. Why ORBX does not allow the user to point toward the steam version instead of their pass/fail method is beyond me. Lots of frustration here and in the ORBX forums for appeals for help. Lots of time wasted by provider and consumer as well. Took me days to finally get this installed.

I used to have the same problem, my solution: unistall box version (if you still have it), unistall steam version, clear all registers, restart your computer and install steam edition again. Fresh start, with that, you will not have any more FSX-SE folders and you will not have more issues, I did it and it worked perfectly. There is a post where somebody explains step by step how to unistall everything and eliminate all registers so you will not have any more problems. Let me look for it and I will write the link.

This is the post, you can check what this guy (barrel_owl) wrote there to clear all registers and reinstall steam edition, I did all what this guy said and I never had any other issue installing FTX Global and working with FTX Central.

For anyone who's using Orbx for the first time - Get the latest versions of the Orbx Libraries from https://www.fullterrain.com/support as well - FTX Central cracks the ♥♥♥♥♥ if you don't have them installed.

Much obliged Zack! I used this link, found the "FSX/FS9 Registry Repair Tool" (4th down) . It asked me for the correct path to fsx se, and fixed the registry by itself. Orbx installed flawlessly after that as the installer had the correct path. Much easier fix than I thought! It took less than 5 min!

Thank you so much to share this link to fix the path to the FSXSE, so I can install ORBX normally and have a great flight in FSXSE :)

***I'm not sure what state your ORBX FTX-Global is in now, but I just installed ORBX FTXG via the installer and it installed to FSX:SE with no problems. It functions fine (let me note that the boxed FSX version is not installed on my computer).

I also noticed FTX Central has had a pretty major update.

What I don't get is that I had no problems with any scenery in the boxed version. It always inserted the scenery into the proper load order in the scenery manager. Now, every time I install scenery of any kind, be it a airport or landclass (Orbx etc) it throws it all over the place. I have to go in and manually move ♥♥♥♥ around.

Pisses me off to no end.
