Thunder is wrong.
Boxed can play with boxed.
Steam can play with Steam.

If you have Steam and your friend has Boxed then you can both use 3rd party programs such as FSCLOUD which will let you fly together and see each other.

Are they not 3rd party addons?

I imagine the OP was asking if Steam could connect to Boxed with no additional software.

And by going to FSXBEYONDGAMESPY or FSXMULTIPLAYER as it is now called will not help as Steam does not use the LAN feature and if it did you still can't connect to the Boxed version from the Steam version (or vica versa) through the Lan feature.

As your fellow FSX: Steam Edition players have mentioned you cannot connect the Steam and boxed versions directly. However, there are a number of third party sites and services which may allow you to do this so you might like to try a few of the suggestions provided above. Please note that these services are not officially supported by FSX: Steam Edition

FSX: Steam Edition does support LAN multiplayer setups. You can find a quick guide to using it here[fsxinsider.com] and further information can be found in the game manual which is located in the FSX: Steam Edition installation folder on your computer.
