Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Confused: FSX, MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024
Invested in FSX aircraft, scenery and etc, but curious.
MSFS 2020 - seems nothing I own is likely to be compatible without mega code modification skills and hours and then only maybe.
MSFS 2024 - ditto and maybe not be compatible with MSFS 2020
MSFS on STEAM seems to sell no individual aircraft or anything . It's either spend more and more money in the initial purchase or nothing.
Seems crazy, but is that about correct?

2020 is a completely different sim
along with 2024 lots of addons are compatible with 2020 and 2024
FSX and addons are not compatible

MSFS 2020 (now titled the 40th Anniversary Edition) has its own in-game Marketplace with hundreds of addons, everything from full aircraft to flight plans. You can also purchase addons outside of the sim at sites like ORBX and Just Flight. There is also freeware at Flightsim.to and at various developer sites.

MSFS 2024 seems to have been created to address MSFS 2020's ever-growing demand for harddrive space, and also players' demand for a career mode. The launch was rocky, and until recently 2024's in-game Marketplace was disabled. Most 2020 products should be compatible, but I think it will be a while yet until the 2024 Marketplace catalogue truly catches up to or surpasses 2020's. (I'm very happy with 2020 for GA. I have a handful of addon aircraft including the excellent A2A Piper Comanche; Active Sky FS; REX AccuSeason; TDS and PMS50 touchscreen GPS; Neofly 4 and Sky 4 Sim tablet for a career mode; and Navigraph for navigation charts.)

FSX? Let's be honest, it was discontinued by Microsoft in 2010 but was kept on life support by third-party developers and the community because there wasn't much competition except X-Plane. Dovetail Games brought FSX to Steam and created the DLC market, which was mostly obsolete products even in 2014. Many developers were focusing on or had already turned to Prepar3D by then.
