How to use approach hold?
Hi, I often fly a B737 and I'm wondering how to use approach hold. or how to use autopilot for approaching the runway. I've heard it's something along the lines of setting your plane to descend at a rate which depends on how far out you are from the runway. Is that it? If so, if you could tell me how to set it, that'd be great! If it's too difficult to explain in typing, could you point me to somewhere. Many thanks

normally do all mine from the GPS/ flight plan and use either GPS or ILS approach. On you your GPS hit the proc button and set your approach. When you get near your destination set the final on vectors.

For ILS you can also set it by setting up the NAV frequency ..it will begin to beep Morse code when your like 30 to 50 miles out and you would hit the appr button when you get maybe 10-15 out.

Turn off auto pilot once your 100 feet away from touching down and take Manuel control.

That's what works for me.

I don't use the glide slope yet so cant help with that.
Here is one video of many.. just search youtube and you will find many

For me. I just hit the approach hold button then re-click the altitude button. I prefer having control over my rate of decent. But thats just me.

Hand fly all the way - no worries about electronic glitches. And - get the approach plate (https://skyvector.com/airports is a good source for US airports, some others can be found if you Google - or pay for them - ugh!). Try to use one of the published initial approach fixes (IAF) or at least an intermediate fix (IF) that gives you enough room to maneuver (the FAA amended the rules ~ 2006 that allows an approach entry at an IF). This video might help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrng3q-DgBA&index=1&list=PL_NnG_PN8zwlLugBDpkLhzwfZqPnXNWnJ
