If that might be useful, let me know and I can put the info online.

Do you have a link for this?

Google Maps or Earth, put "Airports" in the search box. You will be able to see them all as you move around.

In the US - http://flightaware.com/resources/airport/browse/ works really well. Click on a State, and a complete list shows up. No overseas coverage, though. ;(

Try http://www.airportcodes.org/

Those are the International Air Transport Association (IATA) airport codes

FSX is based on and listed per the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) airport codes

You're looking for a book called the "A/FD." It stands for "Airport/Facility Directory." It's an FAA document and only covers the US, and the US is split into something like 13 sections, each section haing its own book. You can get all FAA publications for free on their website, which people have linked here. I prefer http://www.airnav.com/ since it has airports, airport diagrams, navaids and instrument approaches for every US airport.

Also keep in mind that not every airport in the US is in FSX, and some of the airports' IDs have changed since FSX was released.

You may want to look at www.Skyvector.com, it is world wide, they say designed for pilots, but I find that outside the USA the map is a little 2nd rate but the airports are all there with detailed descriptions, satelite images and maps.

As mentioned above, Plan G is designed for flight simmers and is ok, and again the airport info is ok. I can't remember seeing an airport map funtion, but it may be there. But on a slightly different subject, I have found some rather big errors where airspace boundaries don't match up with real world aeronautical charts (VTC's and VNC's) but Plan G gets its info from FSX, and it is not 100% real world accurate.

Your onboard GPS can display a rough layout of your target airport, as in runway layout. It doesn't show taxiways or parking areas etc.... The map function has this as well if you zoom in enough.

Not sure where you are (or where you are flying) but for US airports you can search here by name or ICAO code and get the current SIDs, STARs, approach plates and airport diagram plus runway information. Sectionals and high altitude charts also.

https://skyvector.com/airports

For non-US airports this has just the basics on runways and simplified sectionals but the high altitude charts are good.

For an overview of reading an approach plate see:

There is a nice list organized by country in Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICAO_airport_code#Prefixes

I too found it problematic discovering airport codes and especialy runway layouts and while all the above are certainly helpful hints and advice, I found a good flight planner/mapping utility to the the best option for the sort of casual sim flying I like to do.

The link below has a couple of links to flight planners and maps that include pretty much all you are after (codes and runway layouts). Plus they can connect to FSX and show your plane postion, traffic aound you and many more options which make finding an airport, it's runway layout and approches a breeze.

A Google search of the airport name, example "Phoenix AZ airport" will show the wikipedia entry for that airport and give you quick access to the 4 letter ICAO code, in this case KPHX. These wiki pages sometimes also have airport diagrams. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Sky_Harbor_International_Airport

For the USA I recommend www.airnav.com Here you will find information on navaids, approach plates, and airport diagrams that can be saved as PDF files and printed out if you wish.

For the rest of the world try https://www.vatsim.net/charts/ You'll find the same kind of things that airnav has but it's a bit more tedious because you have to search by country, which leads you to other websites that can sometimes be tricky to navigate through to find what you are looking for.
