Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Transferring FSX Steam DATA
Hello,
I have been playing FSX on a fairly old laptop till now, as I am upgrading to a much more powerful setup. I was wondering if I would be able to transfer FSX:SE to my new computer from steam via my account along with all of my mods that I have download (a lot of them payware).

Thanks for the imput!

If you just keep the same Hard Drive, I'm not sure what the problem is. If you are moving to a PC, then just copy all the files and directories that FSX:SE over to the new Hard Drive. Don't change any directories.

The best option would be to do a full backup and restore to your new Hard Drive.

The catch is, you will need to copy the Register and the Documents folder since both also have FSX:SE information.

To carry this question a bit deeper - If one uninstalls a working and tweaked setup of FSX:SE on one PC, then installs fresh onto their new PC, what files would/should NOT be copied into (with overwriting) the new install from backups of the old?

I, too, am planning and prepping for such a move. But I expect that my real bugger will be in trying to remember the tweaks (that I didn't keep a list of) that I installed/modded outside of but cooperative to FSX.

If all Directory names and files are the same on new Hard Drive (HDD), as they were on old Hard Drive I do not see why it would not work, as long as the new HDD (or SDD) end up with the same Drive Letter, using the same Operating System.

Since you are planing on moving to a new PC, if you want to keep as much the same as possible, I'd just do a full back up from old HDD and restore everything to the new HDD (or SDD), that way you would not need to worry about the Register.

Keep in mind, with any software title that makes changes to the Register, not only will the Files and all Directories need to be copied but the Register as well.

One possible option with FSX:SE is, you could try to access Steam after you get the newPC up and running and just Re-Install FSX:SE from your menu. Once done, copy the directories from your old HDD to the New HDD, making sure everything goes into the correct FSX:SE and My Documents Directory. The new Install should tell the Register where FSX:SE is. As for any extra add-ons, I'd suggest re-installing them so they add the correct entries into the Registry (if you did not just Restore a copy of the Registry that already had the data). If the Registry already has the Data, then just copy those files over.

Warning: You must make an exact copy from 1 HDD to the other so your PC (or Steam) does not notice the change.

I've done a few of those techniques in the past. they can be time consuming but in the end, all your Flight Data should be the same.

Do not delete the original files, just in case you need them.

Hoping to "short cut" it in some ways to avoid some time, frustration, and added costs where possible. But I know that there are some references in the registry and cfg files that address hardware configurations and simply copying over would likely cause adverse reactions. The two PCs are VERY different in that respect (CPU, GPU, monitor, RAM, VM).

If your system are very different, then no I would not recommend copying over the Register. Your best bet would be to just access Steam from your new PC and just re-install FSX:SE.

Once it is up and running, you can then copy over your Roster, and Logbook files over to the new Directories of the same name and replace the newer copies.
