Fortunately the Steam/Dovetail team anticipated this. To fix this Steam stores a copy of the C++ version FSX needs right on our hard drives when FSX is installed. Both x86 and 64bit versions.
They can be found in following path under your Steam installation which by default is:
C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2005
(note a SPACE between the word Steamworks and Shared= "Steamworks Shared" and note the underscore before CommonRedist in the path)
vcredist_x86.exe
vcredist_x64.exe
install both.
You must run these with an account that has "administrator" access and if you get this right the "side by side" error will go away. This all is due to the fact that WPFS (Window Protected File System) did NOT exist when FSX was developed, and it needs access to folders now deemed administrator only access.
