VOR training
All my lessons have went well so far until now. I come to the VOR lesson :( I cannot do this for the life of me. Rod keeps cancelling the flight cos im so ♥♥♥♥, i just dont get it. I will be fltingh and rod is telling me im too far left or too far right while the message in the top left tells me just the opposite. I try to line the vor needles up and rod is just going nuts telling me im too far right or left and as i mentioned the message in the top left corner says the opposite to rod. Ive tried this lesson countless times so much so i practically know what rods speech script is. This is immensley fustrating for me because my sim ends here if i cant figure out how to use navigation im fu***d. Any help would be great.

Here are some additional resources for those who are interested in using 'traditional' navaids for en-route flying as well as approaches. In the US you are still required to do at least two non-precision approaches as well as demostrate the ability to fly an approach as published including those that involve procedure turns and DME arcs.

In the US the FAA has already begun the phase-out of the VOR system for cross-country navigation (similar to what has already happended to NDBs except in the far northwest and Alaska). While some wider area navagation VOR facilities will remain in the western US the majority of the others that remain will generally be those used for approaches.

Here are the links to some videos (there are a series of videos in each section) and written materials that might help -

People talking of GPS defeats the purpose of this topic. That being how to pass this lesson. ( And learn something. ) Clearly this lesson is broken. I've been so upset with it that It had me cursing loudly. I suppose it is a relief to know I wasn't doing it wrong and that it was the game trolling me. I will attempt to disable the auto pilot before he is done talking and see if that lines me up better. That or I will just skip it and nav between two vor beakons in a free flight for the practice.

Do yourself a favour and learn by following the links or youtube videos (provided above by Dan and others) or by doing the lessons in the book below instead. The FSX lessons are broken and not worth the frustation. Although do read the Learning Center stuff.

I learned much better with other sources.

I agree Steve! Youtube was a big help for VOR! I took advice given here to complete this lesson. I set the auto pilot heading due south while Rod talks. One south I put it back at a 360 heading which set me up about 7 miles out from the VOR. From there I was able to get the lesson to run as it should. That said I learned much more from looking up outside training. Rod sucks butt.

Here is a little bit of VOR trivia: The VOR's in Australia are currently in the process of being decommissioned.

For those reliant on VOR navigating, it may be an idea to have a few other nav options in mind.

Not so trival in the US - depending on who you talk to. The FAA is decommissioning VORs in favor of GPS. Remaining long-range VORs will be primarily limited to mountainous regions of the US. The others that remain (and, the remaining NDBs except for some long-range beacons in Alaska and the NW US) will be maintained where needed for instrument approaches. So - still have to deal with the FAA examiner who wants you to do a VOR or NDB approach for your Instrument Practical Exam!

The concern raised by some is the 'all your eggs in one (batch of GPS satellites) basket. Should something go wrong there would be no back-up. Time will tell and history will be the judge, The network of VORs is an expensive thing to maintain. Having flown for many years when GPS was not even a twinkle in someones eye and into today's world I expect that you will eventually see VOR and NDB approaches give way to RNAV (GPS) approaches - at least with LNAV guidance but with systems like the GTN 750 already available (at least to those that can afford the $17,000 plus installation price tag) that can do LNAV+V and LNAV LPV approaches I suspect that most general aviation will get away from the 'old school' approaches. Who knows - with the way technology evolves and the prices drop maybe the guy flying the J-3 cub will replace the NARCO Super Homer with a GPS capable of flying RNAV (RNP) approaches!!
