I would not recomend it, because if you use many add on sceneries, you 'll get out of memory issues.
But the truth is that steam version works better now anyways ... so... yeah i guess you'll be alright.

what setting do you recommend? I have 8GB (Nividia GeForce 720M) I currently have HD Airports ... and will have traffic 360 at the end of this week
Thanks

You can change that in the fsx.cfg file to 2048, which probably would be better and save on VAS. Everytime you put on an addon it will take up VAS, since this is a 32 bit program. Unless your flying a PMDG 777, only then would I not reccomend the change since I have been told and read that some of the insturments on that add on are 4096 and its needed.

ok thanks.. do you know if the max load setting has an impact on FPS?? I get an average of 30 whilst in flight with blurred scenery and this drops to around 16-20 whilst on the tarmac.. if i reduce the max load further will this improve the image??

I will show you what settings i use in my fsx.cfg :

AffinityMask=14 <-- this setting is for 4 core proccessors. add manualy.

[GRAPHICS]
SHADER_CACHE_VERSION=1
HIGHMEMFIX=1
ALLOW_SHADER_30=1
STALE_BUFFER_THRESHOLD=1024
DAY_THRESHOLD=32768
NIGHT_THRESHOLD=4096
TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=2048

[Display]
BLOOM_EFFECTS=0
SKINNED_ANIMATIONS=1
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=2600
TextureMaxLoad=60
UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=40

PoolSize=8388608
RejectThreshold=1048576

[Main]
DisablePreload=1
HideMenuNormal=0
HideMenuFullscreen=1
FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.48 <-- you see this line? this is for the blurry textures.If biger number, the ground texture will load faster.

[TERRAIN]
LOD_RADIUS=6.500000
MESH_COMPLEXITY=100
MESH_RESOLUTION=23
TEXTURE_RESOLUTION=27
AUTOGEN_DENSITY=3
DETAIL_TEXTURE=1

(if you don't see any of these settings in your .cfg file, you can add them manualy..... hope that helps ;-)

Rubbish....if one is NOT using any 4096 textures than it won't be an issue. That .cfg setting will only come into play if one is using any texture designed to run 4096 res. It does not force all textures to run 4096.

The affinity mask is also NOT recommended anymore and hasn't been for sometime now.

Best advice...delete your FSX.cfg and let FSX build a new one and under no circumstance change it.

Short answer....yes. Blurred scenery is generally a sign of taxing the system. Read my previous post and follow. Once in FSX try adusting from a fixed FPS to unlimited at different regions/conditions.

hi mate...I've succesfully made these changes to fsx.cfg except for Affinity mask..
I have a core i7 .. since these changes I've noticed a significant improvement in scenery
and my FPS has dropped to around 20..not sure if this is a big deal or not
Thanks

Running any add-ons? If so how many and what? 20FPS isn't entirely out of the norm depending on where and what add-on. One thing to keep in mind with FSX is never refer to it as a game. FSX is not a game such as a first person shooter. They are at opposite ends of the spectrum to one another. FSX pushes a system much harder than any first person shooter game with it's draw calls alone.

Laptop? I going to lean that your performance is on par based on your hardware. FSX needs pure clock speed off the CPU.

Laptop..yes ..however just ordered core i7 6700K @4.0GHZ Intel Z170 8GB DDR4 Nividia GTX750Ti 2GB..can't wait to try FSX on this machine

Hope for the best but expect the worse. IOW...FSX relys on pure CPU clock speed. An i5 2500K/2600K clocked will likely yield the same results as the Skylake with regards to FSX and 10 year old code. It will certainly perform better than your laptop.
