Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

FSX is such a poor simulator... and has always been :/
I want to say that I have played Flight Simulators since 1999 and recently had the FSX disc version. I uninstalled the disc version due to being way out of date and too many annoying errors! Now I use the Steam Edition of the simulator. Recently I have used Oculus Rift that submerges you in 'reality' 3D all around. I purchased 'Flyinside' software and the video game is outstanding. Unfortunately, this simulator, despite now purchased from Steam has problems -Flight Simulators have ALWAYS had technical problems it always freezes for a few sceonds by bringing up the splash screen of Flyinside and returns back into the cockpit. Beforehand I did play Flight Simulator Steam Edition on the normal TV monitor screen. The game still seemed to have issues. Even with the Oculus Rift, the game has graphics issues, for example, by switching a closer view of a gauge in the cockpit the screen goes black. My TV monitor shows the simulator flashing the windows of the sim. So I have to open Task manager to shut the game down.
I have add ons installed, such as Generation X real photo scenery of England and Wales and UK2000 airports. Also a couple of airports in south France and Ireland put in aswell. I was going to add in Megascenery Earth of parts of Europe but not got round to doing so yet.
Last time I had to uninstall FSX SE due to ORBX/FTX scenery of Ireland screwing up and failing to install correctly, despite going by the book.
I have uninstalled this game a few times due to silly errors and still seems to show silly errors. I look back at this and think - why do I seriously bother with this terribly made Flight simulator? I actually thought it was bug free now DTG took over the licensing rights from Microsoft, yet they (Microsoft) were just as bad by making this very poor flight video game back in 2006, full of bugs and technical problems. It seems that the game still has. The mind does boggle.
I recently purchased a new graphics card and my specs are:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670k CPU @ 3.40GHz Memory: 8.00Gb RAM

Nvidia GTX GEForce GTX 970 (recently installed since owning GTX 770 now removed from my computer)
Windows 10 64.bit operating system.
Thanks for taking the time to read my discussion. I wanted to air my views about the worst game ever made -technically.

If you want it updated buy P3D, which updates it frequently
i bought a new high end laptop having gtx 970m 6GB , which is very good for all games, and still get 40 fps on all addons.
FSX is strict on these things.
If you want another simulator then buy P3D or Xplane
You have lots of options.

Keep in mind that DTG is only allowed to optimize the FSX game for Steam distribution. As far as I know, they are not allowed by their license to do anything else. So we need to fix the bugs in Microsoft's original programming ourselves. :-\

Trust me, I have played worse programmed games than FSX. Just be realistic with your expectations and you are dealing with a ten-year-old game. As Enigmatic said Prepar3D is a fixed version of FSX (Lockheed Martin purchased the rights to modify FSX, including using DirectX 11 graphics) but it is still a 32 bit simulator and had all the "entertainment" aspects and real-time weather removed.

DTG has the rights to release a new Flight Simulator using Microsoft's FS code base (not FSX, that is, FS 10, which belongs to Lockheed Martin now). Dovetail Flight School is now out but the graphics need improving and it is still in the bug squashing stage. Even so, it is 64 bit and DirectX 11. Dovetail Flight Simulator is supposed to come out in December, but both flight simulators mentioned in this paragraph are not designed to be compatible with FSX add ons.

X-Plane 10 is an entirely different simulator built from scratch and has no Microsoft Flight Simulator programming in it.

Disagree with OP topic. FSX is pretty exceptional for such a low cost of ownership. Think you're comparing software that was developed generations ago with the expectation of generations of development. Such is not the case, so we have what we have with FSX.

After FSCon, I am interested in XP11 with the integrated changes from XP10. Other than that, I'm not getting suckered into paying for every P3D "academic license" iteration. Too much invested in FSX to be jumping ship to another GA sim platform (exclusive of XP).

Thanks for all the advice. The thing is X plane is an awful flight simulator and I did buy it a couple of years ago and it just didn't do it for me. I couldn't even get a plane off the ground and if I did, it always crashed, no control whatsoever! So I got rid of that one. With Prepar3d, it maybe better, but in all honesty, I did try it out a couple of times in the past but it really didn't take off with me (excuse the pun) It just isn't as good as flying FSX -despite FSX having terrible technical difficulties.
I truly know that DTG can only deal with FSX the Steam Edition through Steam distribution and not deal with add ons from third party developers. I think that the time has come for all heads to get together (3rd party developers and Microsoft/DTG) to largely improve the simulator so that no technical difficulties arise in the future. Even I only just happened to descend over southern England in the game for Luton airport and it decided to crash to desktop after flying so long over from the south of France tonight. It definitely has issues and not fit for use. Sorry, but it is the truth! Even if the simulator is 10 years old, I would have thought DTG improved it and updated the software? Also if the new Dovetail Flight Simulator is out in December and not able to work with third party add ons available for FSX, then I have wasted money purchasing these add ons all in all. But I await the next flight sim - if it is just as good with regards to flying aircraft easily like in FSX! Though, it would be more worthwhile to have Google Earth imagery updated in the sim if it was possible and developers working through Steam to make good scenery. The basic default scenery in FSX is dull and boring and about time that developers all got together and add in scenery for realism through the Steam cloud.Though, one can only dream at this moment in time.

Spending much time on typing for "a poor simulator" - why? Working for Xplane, P3D....?

Uh huh . . . that's going to happen . . .

I hear the Global Conference for the Standardization and Future Development of FSX / FSX:SE is going to take place any day now. News conference is scheduled for broadcast on all the major networks next week . . .

Hahhaha. Cute.

What would be pretty cool is, and someone else mentioned this, a MMORPG based on various transport sims. Trucks, planes, goats, what have you. :)

Mark44, download the X-Plane demo and give it another try. The latest release, X-Plane 10.50 is out and it's pretty nice. The User Interface is still a bit strange, but it really isn't that difficult to get used to if yo have a bit of patience. The upcoming X-Plane 11 has a completely redisigned User Interface that's still intuitive and detailed, but much easier to use.

FSX is still my favorite, though. :-)

:steamfacepalm: You're having third party mod conflicts with a ten year old piece of software AND you think X-plane is awful because you don't know how to fly a plane. AND you want Microsoft to REENGAGE themselves with software they've already abandoned to begin integration, AND you think Google Earth is high quality scenery imagery, AND you think the most important thing about a flight sim is pretty scenery.
Mt Stupidity has a new peak.
ploppy666 Jul 7, 2016 @ 4:23am
To be honest, I have never had any MAJOR problems with FSX (steam edition included)
Never had any OOM errors, no CTDs, but I have done the chasing frames per sec & tweaking this, tweaking that, tweaking the other for many hours & days :)
For software that is 10 years old it hasn't done bad, its still going strong & 3rd parties still develop software & hardware for it.
How many other 10yr old games can this be said for ?
SteveFSX/P3D Jul 7, 2016 @ 2:31pm
One thing I have learned with FSX is that when you get it working correctly leave it well alone. That's why I refuse to update free to Windows 10 for example. I will install Rex, Active Sky, Orbx scenery, A2A and Carenado aircraft - after that I don't play with it apart from the odd new aircraft.

I don't try and run it with the settings too high for my system either. I almost never get any faults or crashes by not messing with it too much.
Mark44 Jul 7, 2016 @ 4:15pm
Thogmar... Mt Stupidity has a peak? Uh, no I don't think so. We all want a realistic flight simulator and what's with the default scenery in FSX? Boring textures of the same old patterns of fields and towns and cities. We all would like to have the real world to fly over. Flights are the main thing in the sim I know, but come on, we want to fly over appropriate areas and not made up landscapes that appear the same all over the globe just about.

Google Earth images are way more clearer than the add on sceneries that are already available for FSX. I don't expect it as accurate due to it being a simulator. Xplane is 100% more sophisticated than FSX. Though FSX is very good at crashing or having technical trouble, this is my main point here. I have flown a plane in real life, at my local airport for a birthday treat a few years back and is just as realistic as flying one in FSX -Though X PLANE has aircraft that are impossible to fly. I don't have any plans whatsoever to try it out again.
