Do this game have tutorial/mission ?
Hi !

I'm interested to buy this game. But I'd like to know before if the game have some missions/story and a tutorial ? I've never played an air sim before :D

And is this playable with the keyboard/mouse or a controller ?

Thanks a lot for the help !

No story, it is a flight simulator. You get in an airplane and fly somewhere. Plenty of tutorials.

While there are missions, they probably aren't what you think. I haven't seen them in a long time, but they include some interesting flights and landing challenges.

While this is a good simulator, it is still a game and it is intended for beginners as well as experts. It can be played with a joystick or the keyboard/mouse and many are using controllers.

Watch some videos and see if it is something you might be interested in.

It is probably a lot like European Truck Simulator.

Thanks for the answer !

I'ts good to hear there are tutorials !

I play a lot to Euro Truck Simulator 2. The missions are in the same type ? To go to a point A to a point B ? If yes, it's perfect for me !

Good to know for the controller ! Thanks a lot !

There's a set of tutorial missions and also flying lessons to work through with check rides to pass. There's simple story type missions, races, timed challenges and stuff like that to mess about with too and an in game help library.

I've flown it with an xbox controller and it works fine.

I see ! So when you finish the tutorials, what is the main mode ? Free flight or something ?

I play with a Dualshock 4 but it should work just fine too. Thanks !

If you can drive a truck with a controller, you can fly an airplane with one. :)

Keep in mind that I have about $750 worth of professional quality controllers here, but they aren't really needed. A joystick is much nicer to use, but a controller should work just fine.

I even had to replace all the controllers when computers went from game ports to USB, so you can almost double that number. But at least it took 20 years to buy them all. :)

There are a lot of missions to fly. You are not required to do any of the tutorials. Mostly, I just get in an airplane and fly, and make up my own stories about what I am doing. For about a year I ran a charter service complete with all business calculations. After that I flew on FSEconomy which was pretty much the same thing but simpler. I have duplicated the flights from several books and stories. Sometimes I fly out of the small airport near where I live, and I've been there and flown in real life (but not as a pilot, although he let me take the controls). The small airport near your home is almost certainly in the game... no matter where you live. I think most people just play it as a sandbox, one way or another.

I've never played any of the trucking simulators, but I've been tempted. There are no business type things in FSX but there are add-ons you can buy to add them, and it can get as complicated as you wish.

About the only thing missing is combat and space flight, and I'm not sure about either of those. :) Better to get a dedicated sim for those if that's what you want.

Hello again ! First of all, thanks for the answers !

I plan to play with the vanilla game first. I don't know a thing about plane so I'm not sure what type of plane I'd like to pilot or not. But it's good to know there are lot of plane out there on the web ! Freeware add-on are similar to mods by the way ?

I can only agree with you that H.O.T.A.S. (I did not know this term :P) is better but I can't afford to buy a set-up. I like a lot ETS 2 but I can't buy a wheel neither but I have fun to play it with my controller so it's okay !

For the number of buttons on the controller, I don't think it's a problem. I have 30+ keybinding (?) on my controller. I use a lot of combination of buttons (for exemple : L1 + X, L1 + O...) so I can have a lot of controls !

On ETS 2, I control everything with my controller and have no problem at all :P

750$ ? Yes, I can't afford at all a set-up like that :D You play Fligh Sim games since the mid 90 ? :O

I'll explain my experience on ETS 2, maybe you would understand what I search in this game.

When I began ETS 2, I did not know nothing about truck at all. In the beginning, I have play it in the arcade mod (all the help the game could offer was activated) and little by little, I've learned how it works (the 12, 16 or 24 gears, the break, the air pression, etc...) and find that very interesting. I don't say I could go in a real truck and drive it because ETS 2 is a simplified version of real life trucks, but I've learned the basics of all that and enjoyed it very much. So now, I play this game without any help, manual gears, control everything (well... what the game allow to control) about the trucks and the trail (I'm not sure about this word but the big thing behind the truck with the merchandise) and enjoy it very much.

So what I would want in FSX, is learn how works a plane (a little plane in the beginning), understand what are the instruments in the cockpit, basic flight control, etc...

I don't know if my english is good enough for you to understand what I mean but it is what I basicly search if I play FSX. And of course, I want to have fun while learning about plane :D

I'm more interested about civil plane than combat plane so no problem with me.

You should try to play Truck Simulator. When they are in sales, the vanilla game is very cheap and enough to know if you enjoy it or not. On ETS 2, I have all the important DLC and pay it for 25 - 30 € in total in sales.

I don't plan to put a lot of money for now in FSX but it is good to know there are economic system if I plan to invest in this game. Thanks !

Thanks a lot for the answers guys !

PS : I've seen the weather system is broken. Is that a big problem or not ?

Here's an example of one of the flying lessons

It's not so much that the weather system is broken in FSX, just you can't have real time weather downloads because the server is no more. You can still set the weather yourself which will be fine to start with - later if you want real time weather updates you can either pick up Active Sky here on Steam when it's on sale or there's a freeware weather engine mod you can download and use.

This one is a popular site for freeware downloads
https://www.rikoooo.com/
there's plenty of others but it gives you an idea of what you can get for free.

You'll be fine with your controller - my joystick only has 8 buttons (and only 7 of them work) so I use keyboard shortcuts for anything that won't fit on the stick.

Yuuki, I think you'll be great.

I got my first flight sim for the Apple II around 1980. I didn't start buying joysticks until later, and that 20 years is only for the current type of joysticks I use. I had several before I started the current collection. I even bought the original Microsoft Flight Simulator before I owned a computer to play it on; I could play at work.

The flight sim has automated help so it is easier for a beginner. Eventually most people turn this off. Or they get more complicated automated systems. :)

You will definitely learn how a plane works. There are several small planes to try, including an ultralight. I think a lot of people start with the smaller Cessna, and this is the plane currently used for most real life flight training. My best friend took lessons in a Piper Cub back when those were still common and it is in the game. I liked the Mooney because it was fast and had a good view out the windows.

For me in the early FSX days, the best part of FSX was the badges you could collect. You get them for flying different kinds of aircraft and going to special places like the most remote airport (Easter Island), lowest elevation airport (in the Dead Sea), shortest runway (in Wisconsin), most southern and most northern, etc. I got all of those, flying various planes from one to the next. I also visited all the high definition cities and airports.

Flying a plane is going to be similar to driving a truck.

Your English is fine. The thing behind the truck cab is the trailer. :)

I think you guys have sell me the game :P I'll wait the christmas sales and buy it.

I see ! I think I'll stay with the vanilla weather system for while then. Thanks for the information and the website.
It's good to know controller is good enough :D

On Apple II ? Was it the first Elite ? Or an ancestor of FSX ? Haha, your boss was very happy to see you play while working :D

It's good to know ! I hope I will not be lost with all the information they can give in the beginning...

Are all the plane you spoke are in the vanilla game ? I've seen a Japanese TV serie (and to be honest because of this serie, I'm interested a little about plane now) . The Japanese trainees go to North Dakota in US if I remember well to learn to pilot with small plane. And I think it was a Cessna after the picture I've just seen. It seems a good plane to begin with :P

Ah nice ! Small objective like that are very good ! It force a little to explore and try thing you would not try if they were not here. I like it. They are in the Steam Edition too ?

Are you sure about that ? It seems a little more hard to pilot a plane than a truck with all the paramters you have to control :O

Ah thank you ! After re-reading, trails are small roads in mountains. But I was not too far ^^'

There are about 30 aircraft in the base game, all different types, ultralites, gliders, small planes, military jets, passenger jets, helicopters, float planes - they are pretty basic but good enough to learn with then decide which types you like to fly the most.
LHookins Dec 18, 2018 @ 4:54pm
My first flight sim for the Apple was the SubLogic flight simulator by Bruce Artwick, which eventually he sold to Microsoft and it became Microsoft Flight Simulator.

My boss didn't care as I spent a lot of my free time at work anyway. It also meant that I was available in case a problem came up. I didn't play during work hours though. :)

All the aircraft I mentioned are in the base FSX. The Steam edition has everything the original FSX had (except the non-working real time weather).

The experience of flying a plane will be similar to the experience of driving a truck. It won't be like a first person shooter or other game. :D And it really isn't that hard, you will be surprised.

I think there is a freeware real world weather system for FSX. Someone else might know. A real world weather program gives you variety in the weather and clouds and it won't be boring, which is the main reason I use one.

I don't know what all aircraft they use for training today. My friend learned on a Piper Cub. I took lessons in a Cessna 150 (2 seats, not in FSX but available as an add-on) and today I think most flight schools use a Cessna 172 (4 seats and in the game). There are others like a Piper Cherokee which isn't in FSX.

If you get really serious about wanting to learn to fly, A2A has an excellent Cessna 172 which I think is available through Steam and a Piper Cherokee. These are not simple aircraft compared to the stock game though. For example, both planes have a walk-around pre-flight inspection and things can break. Both have maintenance hangars where you can check on the condition of the aircraft and fix all the things that can go wrong. You have to check the oil and change it every 25 hours. Spark plugs can foul making the plane run rough. Both planes are very attractive with high resolution graphics. They have a simpler Piper Cub without the pre-flight or maintenance hangar which I love and it even has a passenger who talks and reacts to your flying, with 4 different personalities you can choose.

Don't start out with one of these aircraft though. When you are ready for one of them, you will know.

Yes, the lessons are accessed through the help system though, not the missions. There are private pilot and IFR lessons too. Here is a video of the first 3 lessons from my YouTube channel. I have added photo-real scenery and some free add-on airports to enhance the experience. There are some bugs in a few of the tutorials and I show how to fix or deal with them. There are more videos of the rest of the private pilot lessons too. Check it out and subscribe for tips/tricks/tutorial and just plain fun free add-on missions. I list the add-ons I use in the descriptions.

I highly recommend getting a flightstick like the t-hotas X with twist axis for the rudder, much more pleasant and realistic to use than a controller pad or keyboard.

Well, I can just thank you all for the the information you gave me !

I'll stay with the vanilla plane for the beggining and look for add-ons planes later when I understand a little more how work planes then ;)

There were graphics on your first Flight simulator Hook ? :-P

Ah yes, the feeling will be the same as ETS 2 for sure but I like the slow peace gameplay ^^

I'll stay with the vanilla weather system for now I think, it will be enough for beginning.

Hmm... I'm a little lost with all plane name so I'll just agree with you on all that :D But, the plane I have seen in the J-Drama was a 4 seats so I think it was a Cessna 172 but I can't confirm it. It was a fairly recent series (2010 I think ?) so one can think that the Cessna 172 is the main plane in school even now :P

The modding communities seems nice on this game. But yeah, I'll stick with the easy plane for now :O

Thanks JJ FSX, I'll look your channel when I have time. It seems very good in a first glance but I could not find the tutorial videos in your playlist or uploaded videos ? (apart the one you posted here).

Thanks for the link Erazer. I don't know any plane (apart the Cessna now :D) but it seems I can try a lot of different plane (like someone said before).

I'm not sure about what your talking but I can assume you are French (you spoke about a Cïtroen Truck before no ? And the city of Nice now) ^^
Yuuki Yuuki Dec 20, 2018 @ 3:02pm
Well, the main games is not in sales so I'll have to wait a little more :P
