Non-Steam payware aircraft usually download as an executable installer. Make sure the installer knows where your FSX Steam folder is located, including the proper drive letter. The installation should then be automatic. Start the game to complete the installation.
Freeware usually comes in a zip file with one or more subfolders included. Nearly all freeware aircraft include written instructions telling you what you need to do to install the package. Sometimes you have to search for and download additional components. More often, everything you need is included.
Unzip the freeware package. Most often the subfolders in the Zip will match subfolders already in your FSX folder. Specifically:
- SimObjects\Airplanes [This is where your plane's 3D model and textures go.]
- Gauges [Custom instruments go here, if required]
- Effects [Custom special effects like smoke, lights, afterburner flames, etc. will go here.]
Usually all you have to do is copy over all the folders in the zip folder directly into your FSX directory so that all these folders merge. Be careful about any custom files that want to replace default files.
Start FSX to complete the install.
Many freeware downloads are repaint textures only, so be certain you have a complete airplane. Repaints require a base model, of course. Textures also have very specific instructions for adding them to your aircraft's liveries libraries. You'll have to properly edit your plane's Aircraft.cfg document to add in the new textures.
I hope this helps.
Simviation is your best friend, on their website most aircraft models come with textures and the base aircraft and they contain almost anything you can imagine, most of their stuff is freeware but there are some payware reskins for stuff like Blackbox, PMDG, QW etc
