fsx's scenery isn't as good but it covers the whole world and most of it's airports. Has numerous aircraft ready to fly, from single engine to jumbo jets. Includes varying types of military aircraft. Extensive free mods available online. FPS varies with the speed of your cpu. The better your cpu the better your fps.
For a beginner to flight sims, fsx is the better choice since it also comes with flight lessons.
Do not buy MSFS.
X-Plane 11 is newer so it has fewer addons out for it. FSX is older so of course it has a lot of addons already made for it. I'm holding off on buying XP11 until they add the stuff that i want (CH-53, AH-1). But those two things are already available for FSX and FSX is on sale right now so why not? The graphics look really dated in FSX so i was going to try looking for some addons that might help improve the cockpit views and scenery a little bit.
XP11 has a really good engine and looks absolutely beautiful with just the default scenerys. Especially the night lighting is fantasic. The default scenery also looks more realistic in the way it has been build using Open Street Map for layout of streets and buildings.
What it does lack is a good ATC which I do believe they are trying to improve. There are no seasons buildin either unlike FSW where you can fly with winter textures as well.
Regarding the flying itself, whatever you learn to do in one sim, you can use in the others. The flight model should be better in XP11.
There is a free demo of XP11 you can try, that should give you a good impressions of how it works and looks.
That alone would be reason enough to stop me from buying it.
IMHO, it's FSX SE or P3D v4.2 all the way.
Absolutely. That is the point of flight sims - they copy the real aircrafts' cockpits and try to simulate all their functions as much as possible by the individual game engines. Flight physics may vary slightly across different sims. If lessons make you excited, definitely get FSX:SE over XP11 as the former has more lessons and covers all the standard flying licenses.
And if anyone else miss Rob Machado (the voice of the flight instructor in FSX) you can find him here https://www.youtube.com/user/MachadoPilotTraining/featured

XPlane 11 does feature several military planes and weapons, I havent tried them myself. But they will be very simple I would think.
Where XPlane shines is in its civil flight simulation - its graphics, the flight dynamics, terrain, realism, smooth frame rates.
FSX still rules in terms of weather and choice of free planes in the vanilla versions, and the missons are nice but FSX is really old and showing its age.
Although XPlane doesnt have great weather (clouds and winds are good), and no seasons (can buy those) it still is much better IMO than FSX.
The only other choice is Prepare3d but that is extremely expensive and not really a game, more a professional simulator.
