I'll use the Quality Wings 757 as an example, I believe it runs around $25 and there's nothing in the freeware world that even comes close IMO to the model, systems, and especially the virtual cockpit of the QW 757. Add to that the dozens of top quality HD liveries that are free to download, plus the livery manager tool that makes installing and uninstalling liveries a breeze and you start to see where $25 is really quite a bargain, especially when you consider the price of some of the really high end add-ons from vendors like Captain Sim and PMDG that can set you back close to $100 or more for one aircraft series.
I also agree with keenrw about the Ray Smith freeware add on airports, most of these approach the quality of many payware airports, and are always a big improvement over the default airport scenery, and I higly reccommend them.
There is a ton of very nice freeware aircraft, airport, and other add on's available at places like AVSIM, and by all means you should take advantage of these, but sooner or later there's going to be some aircraft, airport, or other addon that you are going to have to pony up some cash for if you want the best there is. As the saying goes... There's no free lunch.
From what I've seen, most of the least expensive payware are better than the FSX default stuff. The most expensive are incredibly better. The stuff in the middle range will surprise you at how good it is, especially if you've only been flying the default aircraft.
I've never paid as low as $25 for an aircraft, but I wasn't buying through Steam.
And one of the best aircraft I have is freeware and better than all but a couple of the payware. Manfred Jahn's C-47, with Jan Visser's high res virtual cockpit. Basically a DC-3. Expect a gorgeous but somewhat complex aircraft.

I have to agree, no offense to the add ons steam offers, but they often seem to be missing significant features that the off steam versions include. Personally, I almost always purchase my FSX SE add ons outside of the steam store.
Microsoft no longer produces FS games and Steam is a big company, so it isn't a big deal for DTG put the base sim on frequent 50-75% off sales. DTG's business model is to sell their base sims cheap and gain additional % of sales from Steam store sales. Hey, it helps to keep FSX active in the modern flight simulation world.
Time to grow up child.
FSX is well known for it's HUGE range of addon options. Its what keeps it in the market place as the go to for flight sims for over a decade. The others just haven't caught up with the shear volume of content out there for FSX, both paid and free.
Thank Thogmar for resurrecting a thread that died two weeks ago.
