FSX:SE
FSW (Flight Sim World) - this sim has now shut down, the devs pulled the plug on it.
P3D (Prepared)
All these sims use the same base engine called MESP (Microsoft Enterprise Simulation Platform). It is now old and creaky but its still very popular in simming circles. FSX:SE ironed out more of the bugs and P3D takes it a step further by redesigning the GUI even and doing more under-the-hood tweaking. However it is still Mircrosoft ESP at the heart of it all.
With the exception ofthe now defunct FSW There are a ton of addons for MESP-based sims and this is one big draw for everyone. Thousands of planes & scenery (both free and payware) can transform how the sim looks.
On the opposite side is the newest most shiny sim - XPlane 11. This uses a new engine to tap into the power of new gen PCs and is a really brilliant sim. One really neat feature of Xplane 11 is that it is one giant portable installation. It does not infiltrate windows and the windows registry like the MESP sims. Everything is in the Xplane11 folder. Everything. If you want to move your entire sim from one drive to another just drag and drop and youre done. Adding 3rd party plans and scenery is also a breeze.
Both sims have their strengths and I wont go into that here cos a Google will bring them up for you. One thing you can do howerver is grab the free (fully functional) trial of XP11 and see what you think.
I run XP11 and FSX:SE and enjoy them both. But I admit that the age of FSX really really shows after being exposed to Xplane.
P3D is a tool released by Lockheed Martin, intended to be used by those either learning to fly or to teach those to fly. It is an Educational level Flight Sim, not an Entertainment one. Basically, all that makes FSX(SE) fun (such as the missions) have been removed. The primary aircraft included are Lockheed aircraft and 1 mini sub.
X-Plane does look amazing but looks are not everything. After trying it out, I can see why FSX is still the better sim. FSX:SE is a more complete sim where-as, XP11 still has a lot of crucial elements missing, Air Trafic Control. There are no missions to help develope your skills and no real flight time tracker like FSX has. Basically X-P11 is just good for flight, not much entertainment value.
Kind of like dry toast...No jelly to sweeten it up.
That said, FSX:SE has been a lot of fun for me, and if my current problem is fixed I intend to keep playing it. Yes, I think it's worth it, especially for the low price they're asking.
But as I said at the beggining, it's really preference, my first ever simulator was FS2002 when I was 6 years old so I guess that's why I keep using it. I really recommend it though!
Just because some company stops releasing updates, does not mean software just suddenly stops working. Please stop with trying to scare people away from FSX just because YOU don't like it.
All this means is that nVidia won't have new updates for 32 bit applications. FSX isn't being updated anyway so they have no need for newer graphic drivers. We will be fine. :-)
