How do I 'green up' my scenery?
Just about every place I am flying to and from has a dry and arid look about it including my resident country of New Zealand which we pride ourselves on being green with abundant flora and snowy mountains (South Island, Bilbo etc). Even standing at a ramp at Heathrow makes me feel I am in Bahrain instead.... just saying despite the drought we have just been through lol!

Invest in the FTX Orbyx scenery for NZ. You will not be disapointed

Well like everything in this life it depends on the price related to the quality or satisfaction of the product I guess. Would've thought after FS9 textures this could be at least equal to the task of having simple green looking grass and vegetation in the scenery without opening your wallet once again! Tiresome if there's no alternative to making the countryside actually appear as it is naturally in existing settings.

Wrong place to complaining about the base product, Microsoft is the one to blame, but a few years ago they stopped supporting it. Since Microsoft released it, many addon developers have jumped in, providing a lot of products, both good and not so good, paid and free. DTG have taken on FSX and have provided a stable platform through Steam and re-released the base package as FSX-SE.

You can fly FSX-SE without any add-ons quite well. But like everything, Add-ons can add so much more.

Buying heaps of addons and hardware is still cheaper than flying for real...

I get what you are saying about the publishers of the base product as this happens with quite a few larger sandbox sims or products after the hype is getting old, business and money being one in the same. I checked the forums mostly in AVSIM and my 'complaint' (as your referred to it) has a lot of echoes from many simmers in there also. It seems to be a consistent fault with textures themselves and not seasons as some people point it out to be. FS9 did not have this problem. The 'debate' over payware is also understandable depending on your wants and not needs.

Your suggestion on FTX Orbyx has merit of course however it has large price tiers like many add on (downloads in some cases). I viewed videos of said product on your suggestion and the global base FTX which is needed first retails at around $100 and specific added areas like North and South Island cost around $60 each. Those are Australian prices so for a base package and the two Islands of NZ I would have to spend approximately NZ 250. Nah!

I could fly the length of both Islands for that price and still have change and so thanks for your suggestion but not value for money for this amateur pilot. I guess I'll just download some mesh and green photoreal from the more than generous free file sites instead and remain a satisfied and economic flyer! .... Happy Skies tho and thanks for the suggestion!

Hey Rogan, I see you have the Tecnam Golf from Airsport at Boonah-Qld Australia featured in two of your screen shots. The rego is different, but that's ok.

I flew one of their other aircraft, the Tecnam P2008 at Boonah with the plan to private hire. It didn't quite work out that way, but I have an hour logged in my logbook in the P2008. It has a castor nose wheel, so is interesting to taxi. Tecnams are great to fly IRL.

One hour of private hire of the Tecnam 2008 was AU$250. To get a product that is so very close to the real thing, I think is good value.

I don't know about NZ, but here in Australia, there is the OZX scenery, it's free and the next best thing to Orbyx

You don't need Orbx Global Base for the NZ Islands as they are standalone, however Orbx base does cover the entire world and yes they do cost a bit. The trick is to buy when Orbx have their 40~50% off sales and build a collection inexpensively.

Flight Sim World (FSX-SE's offical replacement) does have Orbx base as it's default scenery package, however FSW is not yet as fully featured as FSX is but it is 64bit and does include Orbx base scenery and A2A's Accufeel. It is also is under active developement unlike FSX which is as good as it's going to get.

I fly FSW often as it has nice highly detailed planes (GA only at present), nicer default scenery, doesn't have the bugbears like OOMs and stutteryness of FSX (I actually get it to max out my GPU 100%), also it has a ton of community developed missions and I enjoy watching it advance as more improvements and features are added, but of course it's not for everyone.

There are quite a few NZ developers, below is a link to replacement landclasses specially for NZ, and they are free.

Many thanks for the headsup and I will check out all your leads to improve my own experience also. I have already downloaded some older NZ mesh from our generous FlightSim sight and at least I can get some 'bumps' in the topography where they are meant to be. The rest will have to be an enthusiastic 'work in progress' lol! Happy skies and thanks for the link!

Yeah, it is a fun little plane to fly, one of Ant's Aeroplanes collection, at least you've got an hour more of real flying in them than I have :-)

Cheers

Yes I also flew another of Ants Tecnam planes in real life, The Tecnam P92 Eaglet, in particular, 24-7600, currently owned and operated by Fly-Now Redcliffe. That was my very first plane I was flying when I started my flight training, I have 10 hours on that plane. It is very close to the real thing, well, kinda sorta. Ant must live in my area.

His "Ant's Airfields" are quite accurate and very good quality, a must get if you like VFR flying in Australia.
