Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Run steam as admin only way to play this?
Can you really only play this by running steam with admin rights or is there something I'm missing. (I'm getting the: Steam must be running to play...) error.

You mean C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\fsx.exe right? I have that set to "Run as administrator". Doesn't seem to help. I've already quit steam and restarted it (checked in TaskManager it wasn't running).

Installing Aerosofts Products it is more or less necessary unless you want issues.

Just validated game files and they are fine. Thanks for trying to help Papillon. Did you ever see the movie Papillon? It's one of my favorites.

Dreamsurfer I think I will be uninstalling this one. Sounds all like a pain in the ass. Luckely I bought it long ago for 4.95. I have a new GPU and saw they have Manhattan and other scenery for it now so I thought I give it a try.

Hah, I never considered his voice but I guess you have a point. We must be people with different tastes, but we both like flight simulators :steamhappy:

You are a bit heavy for a butterfly :steamhappy: I guess I like the film because Papillon lives in a prison but manages to keep himself together (well more or less). Or maybe that's just Steve Mcqueen's basic look. It works well together for me anyway.

Jack, does it ask you for your admin password when you start it?

Correction, it does indeed ask me for user account control, aka admin rights. Been using it so long I don't even notice it anymore. I wish there was a way to play without it, but that's how it is unfortunately.

The easist way is to place your local user account into the Administrators group on your workstation.

This will allow the O/S to ask for elevation of your account when it is needed without needing to Run As a different admin which causes the Steam Client and FSX-SE not to be able to "see" each other.

Alternatively there is a way to run as a standard user without needing admin rights (I run my FSX-SE this way), you'd need to edit the fsx.exe xml manifest and configure the folder/file ACLs so that a standard user can write/delete as well as read.

If the above is all Greek, option 1), would be the best choice.

The how tos are all in the forums here on Steam, just need to search and apply.

Cheers

Thanks for all the help everybody. I'll probably look into changing the exe manifiest as Rogen suggests 'cause running your regular user as an admin is a really bad idea in my opinion and I understand people are trying to help but you really shouldn't suggest that to others.

For example: a while back ransomeware was a common security problem. I know that in at least some versions of it both people running as admin and non-admin were affected. But those running as non-admin could simply reboot and log in as different user and clean up the infected files whereas those running as admin had their system files and UEFI/BIOS corrupted and would always boot into the ransome ware screen regardless of what user they used.
This is because although the nasty that installed the ransome could for example exploit a flaw in your browser to run a process it still would only run as the user that was running the browser and would be unable to touch any of the system or other user's directories unless the user was an admin.

Malwarebytes Premium takes care of ransomeware.

IFW makes a 100% accurate drive image which can restore the boot drive in 10-20 minutes depending your programs and drive layout, number of drives and partitions.

IFW is a drive imaging utility produced by Terabyte Unlimited in Las Vegas and at $39 is an 'add-on' which you should not be without. VERY easy to use and, to date, infallible.

As far as MY computer is concerned I am the Admin and the ONLY user.

Nobody else gets to touch it.

EVER as in NEVER !

I agree with your concerns. In my opinion, the best course of action to be safe, is to have a PC dedicated for gaming, with nothing work or personal related on there aside from your games. Of course, this ends up being a little more expensive :)

My P3D v4.2 computer isn't even connected to the internet whilst using it. It only gets connected once a month for updates.
