Typical Joystick config button setup for Logitech 360 Pro?
My brother and I bought this game for my dad, who's 59. He's gaming experiences are a short list relating back to the mid 90's with games like Janes Longbow (he may have dabbled in Descent and FS2). He wants to play FSX Steam Edition with the joystick, but he doesn't really know how to configure the joystick buttons for the game (nor does he have the time). This will be his first gaming experience in probably 10+ years. Unfortunately, I don't play any flying games, so I won't be much use to him giving advice.

One thing I could easily help him with is replacing the default config file for the game with a custom config with a typical button layout for the logitech joystick, or help him apply the joystick settings in the in-game menu.

Does the config file for this game store joystick settings where we could simply replace the config file with one that already has the joystick setup?

My goal is to find my dad the lowest barrier to entry in this game that will give him a relatively good experience. The button layout doesn't need to be perfect, just reasonably functional.

Any help is much appreciated. THanks!

It's best to start from scratch with settings one good thing is the game remembers what was done and stores any changes.

I appreciate the response. It's just one of those things where he probably won't play it unless the barrier to entry is extremely low - bearable relative to the time he has to actually play it (which is limited...maybe an hour or two per week). I suppose this may not be the right game for him then, but I figured it was worth a try.

Hey if your dad played 'Jane's Longbow' I think he is smarter than you give him credit for. :-)

There are a few videos on YouTube giving a basic run through of setup. The one below is a good basic example. Everyone wants different things on the stick - so that is a preference.

The joystick should be recognised by FSX automatically and should have the main flight controls working straight away (check the video to see how you find if it's recognised) To see if the control surfaces are working just start a flight in the Cessna C-172 - go to an external view - and move the stick left and right to see the ailerons on the wings move. Then move it back and forward to see the elevators in the tail section move up and down. You can use the twist portion of the stick for the rudder in the tail, but I would recommend he selects autorudder in the realism settings for now.

Get 'flaps up' and 'flaps down' programmed into the stick, to slow the aircraft for landing speed. Also put the brakes into a trigger button if it has one. I would also get the trim up and trim down on the stick if possible. Next I would consider a 'cycle view' button and a 'gear up/down button' (the latter can be done on one button) and also a button to open/close the Air traffic control window.

As I said it's all preference and you run out of buttons pretty quick. The guy in the video below chooses different things with spare buttons. It's just a case of selecting the joystick in the controller list, then highlighting the item you want to control in the control settings list, and then pressing the joystick button to map it to the stick. The joystick button number will then be listed against the chosen item.

Thank you for the detailed reply. That's awesome and much appreciated. I'm not underselling my dad's intelligence, I'm just saying he's not interested in spending much time configuring a joystick by his own admission, and knowing him as well as I do, that means an 90%+ chance that he'll never really get into FSX unless he gets the setup handed to him :) Hopefully that makes sense, but honsetly that is a very thoughtful reply you gave and I will spend some time myself trying to help translate the info and get him watching that video
