Starting with engines off?

How do you start your sim with everything off? Looked every where.

Turn everything off and save the flight with 'save as default flight' selected.

There is a bug in FSX that causes it to start flights that were saved with the engines off with the engines running. My theory is that FSX is actually using the engine state (running / not running) of the aircraft in use at the time FSX was last shut down (exited) instead of what is in saved flights. I really haven't figured it out. Sometimes, it works properly.

I've gotten in the habit of hitting <Ctrl><Shift>-F1 as soon as a flight loads to shut off the fuel flow and stop the engine(s). When starting the engine(s), I have to use <Ctrl><Shift>-F4 to turn the fuel flow back on.

It helps to make sure that the engines are off in whatever flight is showing when you first get to the "Free Flight" screen as Steve mentioned above. If they aren't, start the flight, shut off the engine(s), save the flight with the same name making sure to check the box to make it the default flight. When you exit FSX, shut the engine(s) off prior to exiting FSX.

Having a savefile with the default trike sitting cold and dark on a ramp have not failed me so far, except on those aircraft with their own saved panel and system states.

Amon Ra,

When I read your post, it seemed like a dream come true! I've been looking for an easy, convenient, and conclusive solution to FSX's annoying problem of not easily letting you start a flight completely cold.

However, when I made the changes to FLTSIM.FLT that you suggested, nothing changed. Also, the information in FLTSIM.FLT seemed to describe a default flight I had made about a year ago but don't use anymore!

Is there anything I'm doing wrong? Or have I misunderstood your instructions somehow?

But, again, I made the changes you mentioned, and I still couldn't start cold. My planes started just as normally as they always do with engines on.
