street name overlays?
Is there a way to display street names, ala like in google earth?

In particular, I have the L.A. cities add on. Is there a way to know what I'm looking at?

Why? Pilots don't need street signs and if they can read them, they are way to close to the ground.

there is a beggars add-on (beggars X) which is a free download.. it allows you to stop your plane at a traffic light roll down the window and ask for directions...

It also allows you to convert the standard boeing to a low rider... all you need is some hiphop to go along with it

have fun

I'm not a pilot. I just got a new graphics card 1050ti and was looking for something to use it for. I found and bought FSX and since I live in LA, got the extra scenery for it. I played with this years ago, but in low res. So, now I've got 1080p but except for some obvious landmarks, I can't find much. The map helps a bit, but it too does not have streets (e.g. the freeways) that I can recognize easily.

I searched for beggars X. Didn't find anything, nor did a google of it find anything.

Odd, I grew up near the Hollywood Hills. I left back in 1986. When I got a graphics update for Los angeles, I had little trouble finding whereI lived. as for the major roads and highways, they should not have changed with the update and I found them to be correct enough to find places. Do you have a Thomas Guide to compare it to?

I don’t know of a way to display place or street names is FSX, with a little work you can determine the place in the simulator that corresponds to a real world location. The PC Google Earth App is able to display the latitude and longitude locations under the mouse pointer when the pointer is within the app’s display pane. Since Flight Simulator has the ability to display the aircraft’s coordinates you can fly to match one coordinate and fly along the appropriate direction until the other coordinate until both the latitude and longitude on your display match the coordinates you found in Google Earth.

I don’t recall all the technical details like file extensions (.pln?) or folder locations, but I recall an occasion or two when I created a flight plan in an earlier version of the simulator with the quantity of way points corresponding the number of paces I wanted to overfly. The location of the way points when creating the plan were unimportant. As the data was stored in a simple text format I was able to use Notepad to replace the longitude and latitude with the interesting location’s coordinates and replace the flight plan file. I could then load the plan into the earlier version of the simulator and use the usual navigational techniques to overfly the interesting location. If the preceding and/or following way points were VORs I could even use radio navigation.

I’m not sure if the security measures implemented in newer versions of Windows would cooperate with editing like I describe above.

If you have a Tablet, there is an APP you can add to Google Earth on a Tablet that links your FSX flight directly to a Tablet and you could use the Tablet to show your exact position in Google Earth, this would also show Street Names, if you are zoomed in enough. That's probably the best you can do to get what you want.

if you get x-plane and world2xplane you can import osm data (all.free) which is a pretty accurate representation
Depending on the addon, take off from LAX head north and find the Hollywood sign or the Staple Center in downtown.

here is LA in world2xplane via real life OSM data. its in spanish but maybe you see how it looks:
https://youtu.be/YYjRFVwoCwk

The reason I swapped from fsx to x-plane is that all this stuff is for free these days and the fsx add-ons that cost an arm and leg are build on this free data which seems rather unfair (and dearly overpriced therefore).

OSM can be obtained for free via download for example ortho4xp.. even the standard osm in x-plane is quite good stock.

You can download free pfs of any region globally via for example geofabrik.de it contains ALL the roads contained in a cities/region OSM.. not only that it also places the houses, roads, powerlines etc accurately to real life. As long as its captured in the OSM. You can then manually tweak etc. add your house even add a streetsign via overlay editor. All free.

This is not an anti or fanboy post as I also still use fsx whih i still think is great.

What is not so great is the sheer rip-offs for accurate free OSM and vector (road and railway etc data). Its doable even in fsx as there are programs to convert osm to fsx too. Problem there seems to be that the added autogen such as 3d buildings and forrests needs to be placed manually. World2xplane does this automatically for you on top of photoscenery generated via for example ortho4xp and can even fill gaps where osm data lacks with some pretty convincing autogen buildings and forrest.

this should solve your problem for free.
