Joystick problems.....
OK guys, I'm pretty sure this isn't an FSX problem but I thought I'd ask in here to see if anyone else had experienced this problem.
I started up Steam an loaded FSX up to fly but as soon as I connect the joystick FSX closes and Steam shuts down completely. I re-booted Steam and tried again, the same thing happend. So I then booted up Steam again but this time connected the joystick with no games at all running and sure enough Steam closed down on me again.
Up until today I have used this stick many times in the past and never had an issue either in Steam games or none-Steam games. Has anyone got any ideas please ?

First, you should always have your controllers connected BEFORE starting a game (or Sim). Not all detect devices well after starting them.

Second, If this problem happens outside FSX, the problem is not with FSX.

Sounds like you may have had a sudden static discharge when you connected your Joystick, when you first saw the problem, and it created an issue. Very rare.

Try removing the joystick, reboot, reload the drivers, reboot, reconnect the Joystick, reconfigure the joystick, test joystick, reboot again, and then test in Steam (Joystick should already be connected). then test in FSX:SE.

For me, having used computer for far too many years, I always make sure my controllers are plugged in before launching a game even though "plug and play" is much more universal these days.

Saying that, the fact Steam throws a wobbly is odd, though it does have it's own built in controller functions.

What is the joystick? Have you tried making sure it is plugged in before Steam launches? If Steam launches at start up, plug it in with the PC off. Maybe even just reboot your PC if you leave it running 24/7.

Edit: Hah, ninja'd.

Thanks for the input guys, I've now tried this in all ways possible, if I try to start Steam with the stick already connected it won't connect to the server, if I plug the stick in after starting Steam, Steam closes down. Outside of Steam the stick is still working fine with other games so now I'm completely puzzled by this.... The stick is a 'Black Widow' but I can't remember which manufacturers of it.

Gee, with the little info you gave on the joystick and a quick 1 minute internet search, I came up with this name: SPEEDLINK Black Widow SL-6640-SBK Joystick

Any chance that might be your controler?

YES! That is the one Noname - The method that guy uses in the link you posted is the fix dude, I followed his advice and now everything works great again.... Thank you very much for your time and help guys.

gspectre - Yea I found the joystick in google too mate but I haven't had time to get back on and update you guys, it's a pretty crap stick any how but at least it's working again. I'll look into getting a better one soon... Cheers for the help dude.

Well....I never got round to upgrading my old MS Sidewinder which used the now defunct gameport connector, so, I use a 360 pad because I had one. I do also connect my G27 though, set the clutch and accelerator as differential brakes. When I think about it a bit more I will assign all the buttons on it.

The funny thing about when I first connected up the wheel, it responds to the force feedback signals FSX generates. If I could be bothered I would modify it and make it work like a yoke. I use it for simracing too often though so it would get annoying.
