Fsx remains a great program and layed the foundations for current sims i feel. I still use it and very happy, yet seeing there wont be any development going further time had come to switch.
I was very surprised when the "new" fsx was announced and they decided to not make add-ons backwards compatible . I think that was not a wise decision as I am sure that all fsx users would have easily jumped on this. So many of us have invested so much and basically it was start all over. if thats the rationale then i personally prefer to invest in a modern 64 bit engine.
This is not a rant or meant as such but your OP details fsx and the steep price. within x-plane I had this for free in a minute and the scenery looks truely amazing in x-plane stock (it helps when more then 4 gig of ram can be utilized) where as in fsx that would have costed me at least euro 200. at least.
X-plane comes with over a thousands free airports and in fsx i need to purchase 1 by 1 at very commercial rates. There are naturally freeware options too.
