Joystick and Xbox Controller together
Are there any issues or special settings to be able to have both a joystick and an Xbox controller plugged into FSX-SE and use simultaneously?

I have always only used the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick but I have just added Chase Plane and from what I am reading it is recommended to use the Xbox Controller in order to have access to additional buttons and movements for Chase Plane Assignments.

I also have Chaseplane and haven't had any issues using the Thrustmaster Hotas X. You can add theX-box controller and use it as a second controler just be aware that the game might lose it's focus on which controler is primary I did have to re- think my controller button assignments since I use FSUIPC as my controller button manager If need more info let me know

Not really anything special - in the FSX controller options there's a drop down list to select a controller, so you'll see your joystick and the controller in the list - just make sure there's nothing duplicated. Basically just delete any assignments to your xbox controller that you don't want or are already assigned to your joystick.

FSX will use multiple controllers, joystick, rudder pedals, throttles, xbox controllers etc. When you plug the xbox pad in then FSX will probably assign funtions to it that you don't want if you only want to use it for Chase Plane.

Awesome answers from Ken and Morag - thank you.

Morag - You mentioned that FSX will auto assign functions to Xbox when plugged in, can you force FSX to not auto assign?

Ken - I see you are using Chase Plane, I am less than one week into it.

Have you setup key or button assignments to your different camera presets for your different aircraft? This is the only part I am a bit confused about in that could there be conflicts? For example - I seem to have about 6 or 8 Inside camera presets and 6 or 8 Outside camera presets for each aircraft.

Does it matter if you use the same key or button for let's say Pilot View for each aircraft?
Is it really possible to pick 12 to 16 different keyboard keys or joystick buttons without conflicting with FSX?

How did you handle this?

Just when FSX first detects it, there's a default set up for the xbox controller. You can just delete the assignments or set them to what you want - I don't know how Chase Plane works I don't have it so I don't know if you need to set the xbox controller up in FSX or the camera program.

Anyway, once you've set the assignments how they need to be and saved them you won't need to do that every time.
In the controler settings window change the joy stick to the XBox then open button assignment menu remove all asignments refering to joystick Ok the changes. now reopen the controller settings and reselect the joy stick you normaly use, Ok the change exit FSX normally restart FSX normally go to settings and open controllers menu to check if changes are set to what you just made IF all is OK close the editing window by selecting CANCEL and go fly and set chase plane up. If the xhanges didn't hold re-do the setup

Thanks Ken - yes I am doing just that - have deleted all my Xbox assignments and am looking at what to get rid of in the joystick and keyboard assignments to prepare for setting up Chase Plane preset assignments.

Just wondered if you also had any comments regarding CP multiple assignments in so far as duplications or conflicts go as I questioned in my above comment?
I had to remove all views involving the hat switch except paning. The CP doesn' conflict since their is next to nothing on Hat switch setup I've done most of my assignments on the fly. I don't know what Xbox controller does since I don't use one my setup is for the TM hotas and Num pad on keyboard I do know any conflicts make them selves know so be prepared

I've just had to perform a re-install, and it isn't working. It could be that it's just glitching - because on my previous installation there were occasions when the Xbox controller wasn't working, so no rudder controls for me today - just the joystick.

My keyboard assignments are totally custom as the NUM pad and many controls were intended for use with keyboard and mouse. This has been done to avoid as many two key combinations as possible.

You cannot properly control FSX with just a keyboard and mouse.

Just one example is that when I need pullback I only have to press R [Reverse]

thread is about setting up the chaseplane camera add on
