I have ASN for Steam and REX Texture Direct 4 works prefectly with it. I prefer the third-party version from REX that has Texture Direct 4 combined with Soft Clouds, but I used the separate TD4/SC downloads from Steam and it worked too.
I think i go for it then, heard there are problems getting it to work, but if the problem is related to installing on the same drive as fxs its not that difficult to get it working.
Thanks for the info.
Read the manual before you do anything else and you should be fine. REX is a great program.
Also, Orbx Global textures gives already a real enhancement for the terrain look. Coupled with trees environment (Orbx or Zinertek) and Airport HD (Rex or Zinertek), you really get a different sim than vanilla.
IMHO, Orbx vector + LC, new mesh (FreemeshX or equivalent) is more technical.
Default airports will become misplaced, roads might cross airports, airports need to be moved and their position adjusted manually... Not very easy.
Added also, if using a different mesh, you need to cope with "Airport plateaux", and have their height adjusted. All this requires patience and technical skills, unless you're flying always at the same airport, or use payware airports which fixes that
I have asn already and planning to buy rex.
If i can pay orbx with paypal i buy it but you can't anymore.
I always read manuals, don't matter how boring they are.
With some programs etc... i diden't read them and i had to reinstall them, great times.
Considering that Orbx couldn't get their money out of PayPal you can sort of see why they stopped using it.
Like Morag I've found the combination of GEX + UTX (especially when used with Pilot's FS2010 Global mesh), an excellent alternative to Orbx scenery. For large World areas also a signicantly cheaper option than Orbx. Though if you have a specific home patch you love to fly reguarly, then the Orbx Regional scenery packs are certainly extremely good.
Agreed, I think the likes of Orbx Global and GEX/UTX are the best option for airline flyers and longer distances. The best visual quality though is Orbx regions done over a specific area. I have the majority of those - and flying outside them is always a disappointment. The big packages by their very scope and nature can't bring in the regional detail and quality of those smaller Orbx country sized areas. A lot of the included airports in the regions are just about payware quality themselves. They take you by surprise quite often when flying around these areas. They are brilliant for GA flying at the lower altitudes.
Different things for for different people flying in different ways.
Not really, I don't fly anything bigger than a Twin Otter.
Well you are flying too high if you think that Orbx Global or Gex/UTX are done to the same detail or quality as a Orbx Region :-)
I think UTX is better than you seem to think it is.
I have had them both installed in the past, although probably not most recent versions now as this was a few years back. I don't think they compare to a region like Southern Alaska or Norway from my use or any video I have seen. There is no argument it looks good, but just that a region is done at a higher level again with specific work done to match the local areas.
For example in Orbx SA just about every airport has placed scenery and many are just like full payware. There is more detail and individual difference within the regions. Also it's full of placed objects that just bring the whole thing to life.
Not really much use if you like to jet about country to country though. In that situation I would go for Global or Gex, etc. That's what I meant with it being better for Airline guys - what I really meant was that for international flyers there is not much sense in a region compared to a world-wide improvement.
I'd certainly concur with that! The UTX series is very good indeed. I had tried to indicate that I thought GEX+UTX is basically on a par with most Orbx scenery, but with the advantage of being signficantly cheaper. I'm happy to use the former for both slow/low GA & also higher flying. And it's great that UTX volumes cover extremely large areas of land mass.
Having said that for my own real area of interest (the UK) my real preference is for high quality VFR scenery, combined with really detailed accurate autogen. We're lucky in the UK to have the mix of Just Fight's Revolution X & Earth Simulation's Treescape volumes, plus UK2000 & Scotflight airports; which all combine beautifully with the Horizon Generation X VFR scenery volumes. Plus add in the many bespoke freeware 3d models available, & I believe I've ended-up with an extremely realistic scenery setup for the UK. Well at least one that works really well for rme. I mostly use the GEX+UTX combo for flying outside the UK; which is a huge improvement on the default FSX scenery.
I guess it all comes down to personal tastes as to what works best for you. Nice that we have all the different choices. But still can't quite understand this fixation by some that only Orbx content will do. Any players restricting themselves to only that option, IMHO are really missing out on other great content available for FSX. All the best. :)
I flew HAAB to HDAM today, Addis Ababa to Djibouti

That's just with GEX Africa and SceneryTech land class - makes it great to pick out flights like this from google earth and go and explore a bit. I got fair variey in the landscape, towns pop up where they're supposed to and even the vast tracts of nothing Africa has have some mottled variety in them.
