Clearance Denied -- VFR switch to IFR?
Is it possible to switch from VFR to IFR? Other than just bullying my way to the runway, I can't find a way to get clearance when airport is constantly under IFR..

The reason I'm asking, is my sightseeing tour of the Grand Canyon got "canceled" due to extremely thick fog. Wasn't any sense hanging around, so I decided to head on to my planned airport and land.

I think you would need to file a flight plan before ATC will accept IFR.

If you have a VFR flight plan filed you can open flight planner from the file menu change the plan to IFR, exit the planner, save the plan select don't move plane, Your now now in IFR flight mode, all can be done while in the flight with out closing the flight, now do the ATC request and start take-off when airborn cancel IFR fly VFR the flight plan will be the same. I've done this many times Have A Good Flight !

Awesome, I'm going to try that right now..

My other (related) question is, what should you suggest I do in a case like this? I'm flying for a reason –I want to see some sights– so I hate to just skip a leg of my 'Round the World flight like this. Is there any way to advance the time? Can I do the same thing as the switch from VFR>IFR>back to VFR with the time as well?

I am using "Real-World Weather" but I think it's the "snapshot" version, not sure, but I can check. What's the best way to get a chance to do my tour of the Canyon, then stat flying again? Dang, I should probably just turn weather off, since it's no fun flying blind, but that's not very realistic.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, what's the best way to "kill time" in the game without it being a chore?

Sadly, I think something might be wrong with my weather / graphics setup. There's no reliable way to tell what weather is coming up, not that I can tell. I'll be flying along, perfectly sunny clear skies, and BAM! Next instant, I'm swamped in thick impenetrable fog. Not realistic at all.

One instant it will look like this:

Split second later, zero visibility and there was nothing visible a second ago to warn me it was coming.

Not worth having it enabled if it's going to be so absolutely binary and no warning signs it's coming. Sheesh.
On the menu bar open world and choose date and time here you can adust all date and time settings for the location you are at in the flight
That's what REAL time weather does

That worked! Thanks for the help.

I know, but what's the point of having a visual sightseeing tour through a bunch of clouds? I'll just have to balance what I feel is worth putting up with, I guess. I like the idea of real weather to have to deal with, so I can always turn it back on for the rest of the trip.
Try setting real wotld weather to be updated regularly If that's not what you want then the weather themes would be another option
I fly VFR with real weather in GA type aircraft most of the time I have a few videos on my profile page you might look at to get a sense of what's it's like. The Baron over Australia is my favorite

My issue is not that I don't like the real-world weather effects, I just don't like them at inconvenient times. I know, I know.. that's part of life.. BUT, in a game sim world like this, there's not much to do while waiting for weather to clear while landed at an airport. In a RW setting, you'd layover and kill time doing other stuff. But why simulate that in a game? Games are time-wasters themselves; no reason to simulate time wasting is what I'm getting at.

And there's just no reasonable way to tell when a particular weather event (such as fog) is going to be over in FSX. So, landing and waiting it out just isn't a feasible option, not to me anyway. If you could somehow advance the time in the game to when the fog was cleared, now that would be an option I suppose. Guess I'll try advancing the sim's rate of time passage to see if I can come up with a workable solution.

thanks for the help

In the weather setting move the slider change weather to the left that will stop the weather changing.

Just an idea, but invest in a weather add-on with built-in radar like Active Sky Next. That way you can check the radar and know in an instant if the weather will stick around in your area for a while, or if it should pass by quickly.
