Xbox Controller View Axis Configuration
I'm currently using an Xbox One controller connected to my PC to play Flight Simulator, and while the default configuration works fine in most aspects I find that using the right stick to control my viewing angle is a little awkward - since it resets to the center when I lift my finger from the stick it's not possible for me to look down at the instruments and then use my right hand to manipulate the mouse or keyboard while still controlling the plane with the left stick. The only options available are to try and manipulate both sticks with one hand while I reach for the mouse/keyboard, or to use the mouse look mode which stays where I put it but still requires me to use both hands (one for the spacebar, the other for the mouse).

Does anybody know if/how I can adjust the settings to have the view axis controls stay in place rather than re-centering (FPS-style looking)? I know I can adjust the key configurations to map view panning to the D-Pad which would achieve the required result, but I'd like to avoid sacrificing the four extra input buttons the D-Pad offers if at all possible.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I didn't find a way of getting the right stick to work like that - it's ok for getting your bearings but, like you said, you can't really use it to operate the VC switches.

You can use the number pad 1-9 keys on the keyboard to change your view too - the numbers on the right not the ones above qwerty. They work like a hat switch and 5 makes you look straight down. You can re-centre the view with ctrl-space or by flicking the right stick on the xbox controller.

Same issue here. I've searched around but haven't been able to find a way to alter this behavior when panning around the vc cockpit with the 360 controller right stick. I'm probably going to upgrade to a flight yoke as the hat switch allows you to move around the VC without returning to the center position all the time. Other than this the 360 controller works surprisingly well.

Not the fix you're looking for but I believe you could re-assign a mouse button (scroll wheel click) instead of the default keyboard spacebar. It'll free up one hand for you. I personally use EZdoc to get around my VC with short cuts to my favorite views.

I've been pulling my hair out over this too. It's annoying. Strange this is, my Logitech gamepad modeled on the Playstation controller allows for the hat switch on its D-pad with no problem. I have no idea why it won't work like that on the Xbox One controller. Normally MS makes some fine, quality products, and the controller is fine in itself, but it just lacks so much flexibility that other controller types offer.

On my Xbox one controller I've set the D-pad to the look views :
  • Look down (pan) = D-pad Down, repeat slidder to max
  • Look down/Left (pan) = D-pad Down/Left, repeat slidder to max
  • Look down/Right (pan) = D-pad Down/Right, repeat slidder to max
  • Look left (pan) = D-pad Left, repeat slidder to max
  • Look right (pan) = D-pad Right, repeat slidder to max
  • Look up (pan) = D-pad Up, repeat slidder to max
  • Look up/Left (pan) = D-pad Up/Left, repeat slidder to max
  • Look up/Right(pan) = D-pad Up/Right, repeat slidder to max

I have also set the "Back" button to : Mouse - view direction (on).
This way, I can hold the Xbox controller in left hand only, use the D-pad or have the mouse in right hand to adjust view. I switch quickly the mouse mode with the Back button.
